i just got this from a friend 2 days ago...played it for like 5 or 6 hours straight(till 2am on a work night). it's pretty good so far...no actual "campaign" or story mode. all it is is a bunch of randomized maps/systems with different randomized enemies or allies.
the game itself is pretty good - takes some getting used to though. i didn't think the controls were very intuitive, and the manual is next-to-useless in that regard. it can be pretty simple to move through the tech trees for any of the 3 species...and their ships are "relatively" similar.
even the smallest systems can last for hours and hours when playing against the computer...it's kind of slow at points - waiting for resources to do anything.
overally, it's definitely playable...and if you can get it for like 25-25 bucks you'll easily get your hours of gameplay out of it. i plan on trying to try out the multiplayer (LAN) aspect of it this weekend.
in terms of system requirements, i turned all settings on max at 1600x1200 on my machine (in sig) and it ran smooth as butter. the textures actually aren't that complex, so i'm not really understanding where they come up with those requirements. maybe once you have like 50 fleets per player and have like 6 or 8 players all at once over 100's of planets...? haven't scaled up to that point yet though.
