Which would work best

Postby Guitarzan » Wed Dec 08, 2004 11:23 pm

This is my last question until my final specs I PROMISE.

If i want to overclock an amd 64 3000+ which of these routes would be best.

1. 2 sticks of 256mb corsair xms dual channel pc 3200 memory and weaker power supply

2. One stick of 512mb crucial ram pc3200 and better power supply and maybe an extra fan or whatever I'd need.

I'd probably get the tagan 480W if I choose option 2.
So what I want to know is which one and how much does using the dual channel affect overclocking?

For best performance I would go for option (1), but for best all roundedness I would go for option (2). Dual-channelling will help with performance, but the other option of getting better quality or some nice "extra" components may yield better system longevity, and if the system is setup to last a while, then there is always the opportunity to upgrade the memory later.

I would say,......... BOTH. You NEEEEEED to wait a bit and save up those FEW extra dollars and get the dual channel and a good PSU. I just ordered my Tagan 480W a couple of days ago. I cant wait to get it:)

Guitarzan, I know you get bombarded with information about power supplies on this site. The Antec case and power supply you linked in another thread is more than good enough for the system you're building. If you were building a system with 4 SATA harddrives a couple of optical drives, a 6800 ULTRA. a FX 53 cpu and going overclock the hell out of it and water cooling you might, repeat might need the 480 Tagan. I good quality power supply like the Antec will run the system you're buiding just fine. Go with the good RAM.

I would hold off on the OC to the max and go with option 2 until you can get the second stick of RAM
