Desktop Upgrade?

Post by kolias »

Back in 2008 I built my desktop with Asus P5K3 Deluxe MB, Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @3000MHz, Intel Chipset P3/P35, Nvidia GeForce 8600GT, WD SATA2 250GB HD, P5K3 Wi-Fi-AP, 2GB DDR3 RAM, Antec NeoPower Blue 650W ATX power supply and Antec Performnce One P182 case. The desktop now runs VISTA Home 32bit and works very well but thinking to upgrade because the system is 32 bit with a max RAM of 4GB which limits you on todays std’s. I’m not a gamer and use the PC for MS Office apps + small Autocad drawings for my CNC machine.

Is it worth to change the MB, CPU and Chipset or scrap it and go for a new build?

If it works for you leave it..... But....

Start from scratch and build new, get used to the new operating system (whichever you choose) as any will be different from Vista. once you are used to the newer software and it does what you want, think about retiring the old pc and keep it as a spare. (I am using an ASUS M5A99FX Evo, bought in 2011 (or thereabout) with 32Gb of RAM and Windows 10. It does all for me in windows10 (M$ Windows is not my primary operating system) that is required and I wont retire it till it either dies or wont runt Windows any more)...
I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
I am an apprentice trained Electronics Engineer with qualifications to back it up.
I have been repairing computers since 1996.
Yet to some people I still know nothing...
