New setup for prof

Postby profofpcs » Sun Feb 25, 2018 5:05 pm

Evening folks,

Been out of the loop for a long while. Haven’t paid attention to the new tech and wanted to ask your advice.

Was looking at upgrading current machine with mobo, ram, cpu and vid card. Everything else I have is new enough that they will carry over fine.

GIGABYTE GA-Z270X-UD3
Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Quad-Core 4.2
Gskill ripjaws 4 ram 4x4gb
Corsair hydro H80i V2 cooler

Here’s where I’m having the problem. Video cards. When I bought my last card, EVGA 560gtx, it was the best performance for the dollar spent(under$200). Seems now the cheapest 6 series card is around $400. What is driving the price of these cards so high?

That’s where I’m stuck. Really it’s a general purpose/WoW playing machine. No plans to oc, just looking for rock solid stability. Wasn’t going with gen 8 intel because reviews for those boards are not too favorable. Unless you all have different experiences.

Thanks for the help

I've refrained from spending much time on the newer items - but, the GPU pricing is being driven up (immensely) buy cryptocurrency farming. I bought an EVGA 1070 FTW edition over a year ago (11/2016) for $400 - the exact same card today is selling for $800 new, or $700 used.

If you're truly interested in getting 6-series, I have a 660ti that I'm not using anymore - let me know if you want it. I might have another 560ti or two lying around as well...

Ahh. Thanks. Had no idea.

I’m trying to get a newer card but I’m just not willing to shell out $400 for a mid line card. They should be around $200for the 6 series cards. I bought the wife a 750ti about 2 years ago that was $129 or so. It does a decent job but I want a little more power than that. I’ll just wait it out I guess

Has anyone built a machine out of the new gen 8 intel processors? Contemplating going that route to cheapen it up a bit.
