Upgrading over new rig. Which is better?

Postby Z315 » Mon Nov 21, 2016 12:09 am

Hello! I had my current set up for the last 4-5 years now and it's starting to struggle even on low settings.

Essentially it's an ASUS CM1831 (https://www.cnet.com/products/asus-cm1831/specs/) with the follow upgrades.

Power Supply Corsair TX750

EVGA Nvidia Geforce GTX 660

I am thinking of upgrading the CPU and mother board, RAM and maybe a new Wireless Wifi Receiver.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

All dependent on what you are using it for...

Keep PSU, keep RAM, if gaming upgrade the graphics card to an Nvidia GTX 1060 6Gb (not 3Gb - better gaming experience) or greater...

If the motherboard wil take it upgrade the CPU to an FX-8350.

No point in updating an AM3+ motherboard as it is way behind, even updating to get a 990FX chipset won't be worth it...

Get a PCI-e (if you have a spare PCI-e slot) or USB wifi card that supports a/b/g/n/ac - i got a PCI-e Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I, works fine for me and has bluetooth too.
I have been programming on computers since the ZX81.
I am an apprentice trained Electronics Engineer with qualifications to back it up.
I have been repairing computers since 1996.
Yet to some people I still know nothing...
