adding ssd--what do I need

Postby mstruhs » Sat May 16, 2015 7:13 am

I am looking at adding a ssd to my rather dated system. I built this in 2010, motherboard is:
Processor AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor, 3100 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

I am looking at adding this:
Crucial MX200 CT250MX200SSD1 2.5" 250GB SATA 6Gbps (SATA III) Micron 16nm MLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ... 6820148948

I see what looks like a slots and pins for an additional HD. Does the wiring exist on the motherboard?

I plan on keeping my current hd--and using it for storage--but use the ssd for start-up and operating system.

Is what i want to do--doable

Looks like 5 SATA ports on your motherboard, but SATA II version. No worries, the SATA standards require backward compatibility to older standards.. but at a reduced data speed. If not using the "hot swap" option, no need for a dedicated SATA power connector. An adapter from a standard Molex to SATA will do nicely. ... d-sata-iii
Get yourself a decent cloning program, transfer the original install to the new drive and boot up.
Acronis Migrate Easy® is one of the better cloning programs.
