Ok so the power supply will hold out a while longer since it's not the original Compaq one.

Setting the budget at $50 is quite a challenge, thank you for that. Hunting down some half-decent combo's...

DRR. 2 Is cheap
Core2Duos. Are cheap.

All of my laptops are the above and I'm quite happy with the performance. Problem I'm having is the atx. Vs btx. Mobos.

number 1 is a Small Form Factor board that requires a special power supply

number 2 is a Foxconn board under the label, some interesting info here:
