Free software similar to "Neat Receipts"

Postby BIGMAN131307 » Sun Jan 18, 2015 11:38 am

Does anyone know about any Free software similar to "Neat Receipts"?

I already have a scanner, so I prefer not to purchase another one at this time.

HP Photosmart C4250 All-in-One Printer / Scanner / Copier

The financial and informational organization is what I want. I basically want to do the same thing you see in those Neat infomercials. Scan receipts, statements, business cards, etc. I would like it to be categorized by name, date, etc.
The software doesn't have to be a perfect match. I'm fine adjusting scan settings like: contacts, receipts, statements, etc. After that it should do what I need. A free program would be great. I'm not looking for cloud backup, or cellphone type apps. I'd save the information on disc, files, or print out as needed.

What free options are out there?

Has anyone heard of them, tried them, what do you think of them? Are these all completely free working versions without restrictions?
Will any of these do what I want to do? Which ones, how well, etc?

Here are a few alternatives.. http://alternativeto.net/software/neatreceipts/
But you still have to sort each document into its category for storage, with whatever program you use.
Open Office http://www.openoffice.org is a free program similar to MS Office, with spreadsheet, document, filing, and other features. And can work with most scanners.

Have you ever tried any of them? Which one(s) should I try first?

Does anyone work exactly like the Neat Receipts? Which one(s)?

Which one will categorize more efficiently? Type of document, name, dates, etc?

I use Open Office for any needs other than Word Pad. Very easy to create 'folders' for specific receipts, and just drag and drop into the folder. Keeping receipts for medical, vehicle, food, income, taxes and other fields separate is great when "tax time" comes.
There is no real easy way to auto-sort scanned documents.. unless key words are marked for sorting.
For scanning business cards, better to do several at one time.. then cut each from the master scan page and paste onto its own page for storage. Better than doing each card separately!

Quicken and other brands have many office programs for home or business needs. But the 'freeware' varieties have limited resources.

Paper Valet & MrBills seem promising by there descriptions. But both of them are Trials. :(

I've already tried a trial version of "paperless". It scanned fine, but it did nothing for me. :(
I would be better of filing them by hand.

My goal is to scan all my monthly billing statements, checks, receipts, business cards, etc.
I would like them to be sorted by what they are, date, alphabetically.

ex: ABC Creditcard Statements for 01/01/15, 12/01/14, 11/01/14
Would organize like this:
Statements:
ABC Creditcard 01/01/15
ABC Creditcard 12/01/14
ABC Creditcard 11/01/14

I guess I'm going to have to get "Neat" if I wanna get organized. :(:)

When adding files to a folder, each is registered as to date and time. A browser or file manager defaults to "newest first" with date.
The only hang up is directing each receipt or bill into its proper folder with the least manual input.
Could be a barcode, or an ASCII/Hex tag.. or a dot of a certain color.
Some multi-function printer/scanner/copier models come with software that can scan a document and automatically place it in a folder. Adobe has many products, and may have something useful.
