Which PSU to choose? (~700W & Modular & Silent)

Postby rrronald199 » Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:30 am

Hi!

After seeing the benchmarks for the new 4770k, I decided I would buy a 3770k! (Managed to get it for 180 euro). I've been choosing components and mostly I have decided the following (in euros):

ASRock extreme4 121
Samsung 840 Pro 128 118
Be Quiet Dark Rock pro 2 72
FD Define R4 Pearl Black 94
I7 3770K 180
FD Silent R2, 140mm (2x) 26
STRAIGHT POWER E9 CM 680W??? 120
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 2x8gb 95
Total 826

Combining this with a 660ti PE from MSI that I own already.

The only thing I am not yet sure about is the PSU. Basically I want a ~700w PSU which is silent, modular and ofcourse reliable. I ended up with the be quiet! Straight Power E9 CM 680, which meets all the afore mentioned requirements. But I was also looking at the be quiet! L8 730W CM. Which is about 35 euros cheaper, but its 80+ bronze instead of gold. I would like to know if there will be a noticable difference between those two PSUs? Or perhaps another alternative?

Thanks,

Ronald

I would go with the higher-wattage PSU. The system will only draw what power it needs, the PSU will not "push" more power than needed. But the unused wattage equates to better regulation.. fewer ripples or surges to affect the system's stability. And ensure that there are more than two 'rails' for system power with the +12 volts. One 'rail' is dedicated to motherboard needs, the others to ancillary devices. Motherboard circuits require a pure DC power source. Motorized devices are not so fussy.
Any case fans should be powered directly from the PSU, not the power ports on the mobo. Set the ratio of air flow for 1.5:1 nominal, more air input than exhaust. The PSU has to be included as an exhaust port.
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!

Thanks for the input! I'll keep that in mind when installing the fans.
