I was lucky enough to find a posting with enough info to make this work. It might save other people some hair.

Disable onboard network card booting from the smartstart CD or the diagnostics partition. Add compatible card (I had a 3com 3c90x series around). Make sure not to mount any other PCI cards for now and install your system.

If you don't go this route, prepare for a black screen and hanging keyboard. The onboard NIC is horrid with Linux and the video iffy at best.
