Windows 98 works fine with the Athlon XP or any other CPU in its class. Don't be thrown off by the name...the "XP" doesn't mean it won't work with OS'es other than Windows XP.

That being said, I would recommend that you should upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP on an Athlon XP system, for these reasons:

1. The NT kernel of 2000/XP is much, much more stable than Windows 9x.

2. There is no performance penalty for doing so on a fast CPU with adequate memory (128 MB for 2000, 256 for XP).

3. Your applications will run better under 2000 or XP because those versions were written with code optimized for newer CPUs than Windows 98, which was written in 1996-97 on assembler tools optimized for Pentium MMX and K6 processors.

4. More than 256 MB of RAM is pretty useless under Windows 9x. On 2000 or XP, you can go up to the limit of your chipset and it will work.

If you like stability and compatibility, stay 98SE. No problems will arise, and most of the time it performs faster than XP, because well, XP was a horribly written OS. Security flaws all over the place and incompatibilities with some 9x programs and devices.

I agree with the compatiblity protion of this statement as I have encountered many issues with older hardware and XP. As for the stbility, XP wins hands down IMO.

Since you said price was an issue, I would stick with 98. It works fine with new hardware- just hang on to the driver disks you get with the motherboard and other hardware, as you will definately need them.

Heck ya, stick with 98SE. I have an AMD 1600+ XP chip and have no problems. I even run 512MB of DDR, which some say is Unstable with 98SE. I can keep it up for days without rebooting, really, why would I want to do that? I mostly play games with my PC, so WIN98SE does the trick. It's quite stable (just watch what you install onto it), and it gobbles up less system resources than 2000/NT/XP/ME.

haven't adjusted your vcache settings in system.ini- might be a good idea- i'd follow the instructions as per bootdisk.com (i ran into the insufficient memory bsod w/ 512meg ddr, adjusted vcache- haven't seen it since! it was norton system works- type of intensive program that affects the os?!?):

btw, i've found that win2kpro is almost twice as fast when using dsl, and can have more pages open at the same time (as compared to win98se)
