for xp u should consider the following for good performance
120mb for xp ONLY
100mb for apps and programs (maybe a little less)
200mb for games or major programs
100 free for other stuff

that should give u best peformance since xp love memory even though u wont use that much memeory it just good to have 150 mb free

Wot about memory fragmentation..? You know when a prog fails to release all the ram it's used after you shut it down, and then another prog you just launched takes up more ram on top of this...or something like that.
There a memory "optimisers" available, often free, which are supposed to cure this. I used one of these under Win98SE but never really noticed a performance boost myself...

xp use kernel memory which means it basically release memory after the program is closed win98 use normal memory which u need to rum em defraf xp u dont need to
