How to make Win10 look more like WinXP?

Postby BIGMAN131307 » Tue Dec 13, 2016 10:09 pm

I know Win10 is [cough} prefect, shinny, and new. While WinXP is old.

But from what I've seen of Win10 so far  I'm not impressed.
:mb_help1:: How do I customize the look of Windows 10? I would like a similar layout to Windows XP.
Start / Most used Programs / All Programs, etc....

All those APPs like settings are annoying. I'm using a desktop not a tablet.
How do I remove or turnoff Cortana?

After 13+ yrs with XP, I kinda like it. I know where everything is, if not I can find it fast. When I was installing programs onto Win10 using a USB flash drive. I closed the window to take a break.
Ten minutes later I came back to continue, and forgot where to open up the USB flash drive. :( I did find it a few minutes later. But there is a better way to have this setup. IMHO XP was perfect for this.

Please help me get this Win10 install inline.

A lot of complaints about how Win 10 looks and acts. Yes, a lot of useless features also. You can disable some from the desktop 'settings' panel, or set priority in the 'startup' panel as auto-start or not. Task Manager also.
There are several themes or 'skins' to choose from, resident. Or a lot if searching on-line. But choose a theme from a reputable site, not some unknown one.
Some suggestions:

:? So is this what I'm looking for? http://www.classicshell.net/

What about Cortana?

Would this work? http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10 ... ompletely/

On a system running Windows 10 Home, you need to make a manual edit to the registry. Find the key HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search (you might need to create this key if it doesn't exist), and then create the DWORD value AllowCortana and set it to 0

best bet is to follow the methods you find on the net on how to disable features or whatever. they continue to change, as windows continues to roll out updates/etc. Just be sure to back up your installation...messing with the registry is a quick way to hose things.

I, personally find Win10 to be super simple...I don't use the start menu or the apps or anything else, just the search feature. Type in what you want(or even just the beginning of it) and you'll get pointed to where you need to go. To date I haven't been directed incorrectly or not been able to find what I'm trying to find/do.

From experience with windows 8 and 10, leave the skin well alone and try and get used to it. There are to many 'interactions' between graphics/folders/menus etc and messing with them leads to issues. I hosed a win8 setup trying to make it look like windows 7. Anything I have tried in windows 10 has had some annoying conflicting issue on something. I disabled Cortana and lost the windows store for some inane reason. If it is your only system or your main rig, I would leave as is...

:-k Well I could always tinker with the properties settings built into Win10 first.

Maybe I can come up with a happy medium. At least something that don't look as childish.
