If the old drive was two years old or older, maybe a new drive of same type would be a good idea. Set it up the same as the old drive, then an install of the OS.. then copy over your data. Then the old drive can be used as a backup.

I have the new hhd and have installed windows. Now back to the sound problem. When I try to install the suppose driver for the audio, I get an error message that it doesn't detect the audio card. The device manager is showing a yellow ! in other devices section, for the PCI Input Device, and the Multimedia Audio Controller. I tried to find a drivers for them but so far no luck. Didn't have a problem with the PCI Input Device when I had win7 installed on the old drive. Any ideas what the problem is? How can I get my sound now? I am using the soundblaster live! card. :-|

Is the on-board sound totally disabled? Check for a MIDI port also. If there is a control line for a modem IRQ, set it as "NA".
On the Device Manager Page, right-click on that feature with the warning flag, choose 'properties' and see what Windows thinks it is. You can also view the IRQ/DMA assignment.
Some older SB Live! cards had one or two jumpers.
Should be an "EMU###" on the card. Google that ID for reference.

I made sure the on-board sound was totally disabled. There was no MIDI port. There is no control line for the modem IRQ. On the Device Manager Page when I right-clicked on those features with the warning flag and choose properties, Windows thinks they are a PCI Input Device and a Multimedia Audio Controller. Windows states "The device isn't using any resources because it has a problem" ... when I checked for the IRQ/DMA assignments. The sound card had EMU10K1 SFF number ... the drivers I found didn't work for it.

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/CREATIVE/Creative-Sound-Blaster-Live-Live-5-1-kX-Driver-51003548-x86.shtml#download

Also Windows hasn't done any updates since the install. When I ask it to check for updates the green bar keeps moving while checking for updates, but nothing happens.

Creative Labs classifies that model as "end of service life". Reading the fine print in that, could be 'abandoned'.
There are some links for the drivers, but not from the parent source. The digital signature that Windows WHQL looks for may not be as noted in the driver files.
Windows cannot do any updates? Something is not set properly! Did the OS register and activate?

The OS is active and registered, but so far no updates ... it just stalls out when I ask Windows to check for updates. I have it tell me what updates it has and I install them myself so I don't get the window 10 nag ware or upgrade Windows 7 to 10 without my permission. Could you give me a link to one of those drivers you saw? :o

You have to go through a few menus to set up Win 7 for auto-update features. Best option is to automatically get them, but you choose when to install.
If using an antivirus and firewall program from another source, ensure the Windows similar programs are not active.

I found a driver for the audio card, but it will not install because it doesn't see the PCI card due to the lack of driver for the PCI input device. I had the setting for updates to download them, but let me choose which ones to install and I am not getting any updates. I set it to automatically update ... but still nothing. :( The green moves through the bar while checking for updates, and that is as far as it will go. I suspect windows would update where I would get a PCI input device driver, but the problem is no updates.

I went to this microsoft page to manually reset Windows Update components and followed the instructions but still no go ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 Some of the dll failed to load ...'gpkcsp' slbcsp' 'wuaueng1' wucltui' muweb' and some loaded but stated the dll regsrv was not found. Like 'gmgr' browseui . It stated to skip step 4 if the first time, but since it didn't work I tried step 4 ... when I entered the first command to back up the systemroot I got an 'access is denied' ... I opened the cmd prompt as administrator. I also the installed latest update agent still no go. :?
