OS support required by motherboards/chipsets?

Discussions, problem solving, and tips and trick for operating systems go here. Windows, Mac, and Linux are ok. If you want to fight or put down an OS go to The Hundred Year War Forum. It will not be tolerated here. Make sure to post what OS is being discussed in the title of your post.

OS support required by motherboards/chipsets?

Postby Uitlander » Tue Mar 29, 2011 5:04 pm

I'm wanting to have PC done at custom-build shop that has three hard disk drives...one for PC-BSD, one for Linux Mint, and one for XP Pro. Been told that most important thing is to find "motherboard & chipset that supports all three operating systems." Is this true? After much google searching I can barely find them that support XP Pro OR Linux. I see no mention of any sort of BSD support, nor any that support BOTH Linux & XP Pro. Was this bogus advice, or am I missing something?

Chipset Intel 945GV Julia Works perfectly
Chipset Intel 945IGP Julia Works perfectly
Chipset Intel i53 Gloria Works perfectly
Chipset Intel ICH9R Isadora Works perfectly
Chipset Intel P35 Debian Works perfectly
Chipset Nvidia MCP55 Debian Works perfectly
Chipset Nvidia MCP61/6150SE Julia Works perfectly

PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD:
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/8.2R/hardware.html

Windows XP is compatible with everything listed in there. I have to say that most of the stuff listed in there is already a few years old.

Well, I was really hoping on using ATI or some off-brand chipset...just to clarify, are you saying Intel & nVIDIA is the only useable option?

You're like the fourth person to send me to that freebsd.org URL. I've looked it over many times, but cannot find anything useful, unless its cloaked in such technobabble it all runs past me!

I checked the FreeBSD support forums, they are adding SATA3 support to version 8.x stable as we speak, so it is improving.

From what I see with other linux/unix variants, generic drivers seem to work for anything ATi apart from their video cards that need a special driver. You may want to ask around in that forum, I suspect they didn't make a help page with frequently asked questions about hardware support yet.

As for Mint, that is what I can find for support, it's possible more stuff is supported but simply not listed in the release document but rather means you have to patch in new drivers etc.
