Re-flashing Packard Bell 680

Postby cnfcomputers » Mon Aug 29, 2005 7:17 am

Hi,
I am in the process or reconditioning an old Pentium computer. It is a Packard Bell EXECUTIVE MM 9004 D/3 With a 680 Orlando motherboard. In the past, the original processor was upgraded with a Spectra 400 upgrade package from Evergreen Technologies (http://www.evertech.com/). The update required a new BIOS to be installed. This replaced the old Packard Bell boot screen with "MR BIOS". As part of the reconditioning work, I want to return the computer to its original state. I have reinstalled the original Pentium 133MHz processor, but cannot flash the BIOS to the latest version on the Packard Bell website (http://support.packardbell.com/uk/mypc/ ... cy_PB#show). An error message is displayed during the flash process which states: "This system does not support flash memory". I have also tried using the BIOS recovery pins at J9C1 on the motherboard but the system only beeps once, not twice, and a re-flash is not performed. I understand these problems are due to the fact that "MR BIOS" was installed and this cannot be easily reverted without a backup disk. This may have been created at the time of installing the Spectra chip, but has probably been lost in the sands of time as it was quite a few years ago. I did think of changing the BIOS chip, but it is soldered directly to the motherboard making this route impractical. Short of swapping the motherboard for a replacement 680, is there anyway I can restore the original BIOS?

Your help is most appreciated,

Matt.

If it does not respond to the bios recovery procedure (which makes sense since it has a different bootblock now) you will indeed have to use the backup disk which probably can be had from http://www.esupport.com
We hate rut, but we fear change.

The backup disk is not available from http://www.esupport.com (seems it used to be) but I managed to find a copy of MRFLASH.EXE elsewhere on the internet which is the MR BIOS flasher tool. I found another motherboard with the Intel 430VX chipset, made a backup with MRFLASH.EXE and overwrote MR BIOS on the PB680. What a mistake! The system would not boot at all, and still would not respond to the recovery pins. After many hours, I managed to get MR BIOS flashed back on by using the recovery pins and a combination of the PB and MR BIOS flasher disks. It seems that I need a copy of the original PB680 (Orlando) BIOS made by the MRFLASH.EXE tool in .rec format. If anyone has such a motherboard with the Packard Bell BIOS still intact and would be willing to help out, I would very much appreciate your help.

Many thanks,

Matt.

Hi there,

We have an old Packard Bell computer that we plan to get rid of, with all hardware intact. It's the same model as the one you mentioned, and it's available for you to have if you would like it,

Cheers,

Nada
