S.M.A.R.T. for hard disks

hi, i have a gigabyte GA_7VTXH mb and in the bios features setup S.M.A.R.T for hard disks is set at disabled (default value) if i was to change the settings to enable HDD S.M.A.R.T capability. what would this do ?

It would be able to detect problems that could occur to your hard drive before they happen. Like failing from excessive heat, for example...
