please help, automotive scan tool board question

Postby dreamwerkz_garage » Sat Mar 13, 2010 6:24 pm

i guess this is actually a daughterboard, but i ran out of options and do not know who else to ask. i have a scan tool i use for school to learn diagnostic procedures, but during the week somehow my board fried or something. so without the program this tool is useless. can someone let me know what type of board this is and maybe point me to the right direction on where i can get a new one or get new parts to rebuild this one? if this is the wrong place to post, then feel free to move or delete. but i did try searching and this seems to be the only place my question seem to fit.

i have tried emailing the company but they seem to charge an arm and a leg for the original cartridge. i am hoping to find all other options first before going back to the company about this.

here is a picture of said board...
(looks like i can not post a link or picture yet )

Tools like that are generally proprietary, there's not much interchangeable between brands/models, even if its made by one company and relabeled for another. Old Dells, HP's, and the like, prime example. PC133 or DDR, sure, but try finding a set that worked that wasn't from Dell.

We're not talking about a regular part here :o not even remotely:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g87/f ... e003-6.jpg

It has something resembling an ISA connector on the side and an EPROM.

It's possible (since the sticker is not completely covering the window) the programmed part got corrupted by the incoming light over time (these things are erased by UV light). So, time to call the manufacturer of this thing and ask them is they can reprogram that EPROM chip for you with the proper firmware.

i tried, but the said they do not warrant this cartridge, and the only way is to upgrade to their newer package. which is $2000.

i did alot of research the past couple days and found alot of info on this eprom chip. its a 8mb, so im thinking, if i have to get a new chip programmed, do you think its possible to get a 16mb to replace it with?

Mechanically? Maybe, if the power requirements and such are identical. Legally? Not if Vetronix holds the patent and does not offer it for seperate sale. You're stuck there. You'd be better off trying to find a good part on auction or classified sites.

ok, thanks for the help everyone. i guess ill just junk this one or sell it without a card. ill look into getting a new one later. its really not worth it updating this one for $2000 when i can already buy a used one with all the updates for under 2k.

not sure if you have others but throw this one in the closet for spare parts or sell it off for spares...
