CPU Upgrade

Postby boatabike » Tue Sep 29, 2009 9:09 pm

Any suggestions on where i can go with upgrading the CPU on my present comp.
I have an Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe MB with an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ socket 939
What is available and what will fit etc? How much improvement can i expect. Thanks in advance for any info.

Good luck. Very few retailers still sell socket 939 processors anymore at all, it's four generations old. I did a quick search, and if your board supports it, about the best you're going to get is an FX60, still about $300 on eBay. Maybe a 3800+ dual core, again if your board supports it. It should, I believe that board has an ATI chipset and fully supports dual core S939's. Question you have to ask is whether it's worth buying an expensive old processor, staying limited to DDR400, stuff like that. You could get into a decent new motherboard and processor for the same cost as an FX60, and have a far better improvement in speed.

It even supports Opteron dual-cores that might be a better option (again, if you can find them). The first remark still stands, for real performance improvement, replace board/CPU/memory as a set.
We hate rut, but we fear change.
