If gateway sold fire extinguishers, I wouldn't buy one from them, even if I was on fire.

Hey, m$ has some sort of contest going where you could win an e-machine. They come preloaded with XP and the power supply comes preconfigured for maximum combustibility. Ahh e-machine, the computer world's Ford Pinto.

I highly disagree. I by no means support or want anything to do with gateway and their over-priced POS's.

If ya simply hafta buy, I would recommend Compaq as I have had one running since 98 with no troubles whatsoever. Friend of mine got a new Dell this evening and it seems to be all about fluff. Had this lil gimpy HD in it that looked like a CD case, lol. Hell, I dont know, maybe its a good drive, but it looks strange. Also has a rather featureless motherboard when compared to the ASUS stuff Im used to looking at. One thing I really did like about the Dell was the clamshell case. Push a button and the danged thing opens right up. I also liked the manifold on the CPU heatsink/fan venting directly to the outside instead of swirling it around in the case. This Dell came with a P4 2.53 ghz cpu and Windows XP, but I swear the systems I have built are much more responsive. I can be logged in and running apps in the time it takes the Dell to show me a desktop screen, lol. Build your own I say, but be very careful. You might learn something and we all know how dangerous that can be!

Have you friend do a format and a fresh install of XP. I have found taking all of the OEM's $%^!@# software makes the computer a lot more "peppy".
