I am voting for Windows XP Pro. I have used every operating system by Microsoft since DOS 2.1 except Windows ME. XP combines the stability of 2000 with the usabilty of 98. On a fast machine it is sweat. It has also been the easiest for me to network.
I will admit however that my favorite operating system to date was OS/2 Warp. It seemed more responsive that any Microsoft System, was more customizable and had REXX as a programming language.

You just don't know the "secret" capabilities of Windows XP. It is too good, we are forgetting to turn the unturned. After Win 2000, I will go Linux, at least my secret is still unknow to anybody even to a giant like Microsoft.
I have XP Pro running on my P2 433mhz machine and it is great. I wouldn't say it is crap on <1ghz. I haven't noticed any speed drop from 98 to XP. My only gripe against XP is that it takes up way too much space on my 14gb hard drive (
) wheras 98 wasn't quite so big.

I hacve owned and used every windows OS sinci 1.0.2 ...(dual boot now...win xp pro, and linux red hat 7.2 pro).... I love them both way better than any other i have used........
Beginner OS I would reccomend XP pro (ease of use)
Beginner I would reccomend Red Hat (open source is a better way to go, and it's easier to learn if you aren't used to another)
