BEST COMPRESSION UTILITY

Postby miki02131 » Thu Aug 21, 2003 11:23 am

To many WinZip stands alone in this category. It is by far the most well known compression utility around. But is it really the best? Could a lesser known compression utility out there outperform winzip. It's time that the truth comes out?

The best compression utility title shouldn't be based on name alone. I think it is important that the utility support a large base of COMPRESSION FORMAT. Also the compression engine should be FAST and provide the highest COMPRESSION RATIO possible.

Based on the above characteristics, I think WINRAR should be crowned as the king of compression utility. But this is just an Opinion? Agree or disagree, what do you think?

He should have had a separate catagory for 'simplicity of use'. The console tools may perform well but they are a pain to use. I'll stick to 7zip - it may not be the top performer but its quick and painless to use with no learning curve. I've tried most of the compression tools and a lot of them are just confusing with more features than they need. I think right-click menu is a must too. Just my two cents worth.

Once you get used to it though, winzip (and it's better twin) ultimate zip are REALLY easy to use.

I hate the bloddy 'Wizard" interface that comes with all the compressions, winRAR and winACE both have the "classic" view I fell inlove with back in the winzip day on windows 95.

I remembe the first time one of those bloody wizard poped up, made the damn interface a pain the buttock to use!

But at least they ahd the brains to put in the "classic view only" option.
