this is just something that me and one of my friends had talked about. Would be interesting to see what the two companies would come up with if they combined forces.

I don't really understand what would be gained. I think think you would lose alot of performance in the merging of technoligies.
Not to mention the fact that they are direct compeditors.

Oh I know they are direct competitors. But some of their technologies would be interesting to see if they'd boost performance. Such as the HyperZ and Charisma II engine. And also the Trueform capabilities of the ATI chip. And then the capabilities of the Nvidia chip on top of that. Of course it would probably take massive re-engineering to get it to work.

Any sort of merging would result in one company dominating, and the other basically dying [nVidia, 3DfX]. It would be fantastic if they would, but ATi has much more innovative technology than nVidia and, if anything, the consumer would lose out on the merits of the original ATi cards. I just couldn't see nVidia and ATi ever buying each other out, they seem to play the game all too well. Maybe a Matrox-ATi merger would do good.

And I don't see what technologies nVidia has..

I'm not talking merger on the company here. I'm talking a joint project on a graphics card.

would never happen. if anything it would be funny to see microsoft buy nvidia then they could build the entire xbox in house. and Mvidia Cards would only work on windows

That reminds me of an old Wav file I once heard.

"We are Microsoft, resistance is futile!"

Somehow that sounds taken from somewhere but I can't seem to put my finger on it. Oh well... Back to using my MS products.

Well, the "Resistance is futile!" is what the Borg always say on Start Trek: The Next Generation, so maybe that's what's jogging your memory?

It was meant as sarcasm. Note the last part of my post:

"Oh well... Back to using my MS products"
