you'd have to have a GPU with a couple ghz under its belt to make that game run well.

I doubt that since we won't see any gpu with more than 1ghz of power for a very long time. And I believe in all those reviews of the unreal test engine the geforce 4 beat ATI hands down.
I'm just bringing example that nVidia does this much more frequently, and often their card with the extra ram bring barely, or no, difference in performance
nvidia didn't take and old geforce 3 and double the ram then call it new. they released there cards with 128megs of ram standard i believe only the ti4200 has the option of using 64 MB and 128mb of ram which again was the original design of the card not a revamp. the only true blunder of nvidia is the Mx series of the geforce line up and that's really no secret since die hard nvidia fans [such as me] will come rite out and say it.
But nVidia didn't make a mistake, as they probably got quite a few dumb people with several hundred bucks in their pockets to buy these well under-powered cards
Your saying the 4200 is an under powered card  it seems powerful enough to beat ati's top of the line card so if that's underpowered I would hate to see what an overpowered nvidia card would do to ATI.

For one I didn't say the Radeon 8500 has better performance than the Ti4200. Okay so the 4200 gets better FPS and so do all the higher GF4 cards, but as the 4200 is nearly double the price of a Radeon 8500, I would not buy a Ti4200 card. Also, I am very fond of the 2d quality of Radeons. Why even buy a good monitor at all? Let's all go monochrome and the hell with quality and color, and focus on the very minute aspect of the card: the frames-per-second. Beat the Radeon 8500 hands-down? Maybe in numbers, but the Radeon beats all the GF4's if you want to bring in the quality of the picture. You buy a nVidia Ti4200 for twice the price, I buy the Radeon 8500. You may get 10% more fps, but hey my screen is purtier :P

how is this not argumentative? you say there is a visual difference between the two cards and I agree. yet when certain settings changed the difference becomes minimal. you say fps is not very important, then why does almost every gamer in the world stress the importance of fps? you say after 30fps the human can not see a difference while this is true in the most basic sense, being restricted to 30fps you would notice a difference in game play as this limit will inevitably cause other factors of the game to slow down. a low fps like 30 creates a large bottleneck in overall game performance. when you say radeon 8500 be sure to specify [as you have done earlier] the model you are talking about [64mb version] and be sure to specify that the 99 dollar version is OEM [ nothing but the card] unlike the Geforce card which is retail. while i doubt there is a performance difference between the two ATI cards, OEM is always cheaper than retail which in ATi's case is 107.00 usd before shipping. the retail version the ti4200 is 159.00 usd some how that does not seem like double the price of the retail Radeon card. then again maybe your using a different math than me.Image

If you were getting 30fps on a game and the sound was locking up frequently, then it is not the video card's problem. Video card make video, sound card make sound, cpu make computations. I'd venture to say that if you upgraded your video card you would have the same problem, it's not like the video card is going to take over for the CPU, that's not its job. A 16 dollar SiS card gives better video quality than the GeForce cards. Correction: it is 175 for a 128mb Ti4200--which might I add, the vendor of this particular card is not disclosed, whereas with ATi you will be buying from them directly and no middleman vendor--, which IS what we are talking about, no? [edit: no]

can you then please post a benchmark of the ti4200 with 128mb versus the 64mb version versus the radeon 8500 with 64mb? as the other was of the 128mb version, which makes that post off-topic.

Actually, as for the memory, I believe that Gainward 64mb would overclock higher than most 128mb sticks because it has 3.5ns vs. 4.0ns for the 128mb. That's another thing I hate about buying nVidia, you have to worry about varying ns ratings between manufacturers. Well, I thought that the Ti4200 w/ 128mb was the competitor here, but obviously the 64mb w/ 3.5ns is more competition than that. Atleast for Gainward Cards..

That's me on the right.
