Everything gets marked as read too soon

sometimes I log on at school or work, and I don't have time to look at
evertyhing. If I log off then log again later, everything is marked as read
even though I haven't read it.

Yes this happens all the time. As soon as you logout every thread updated prior to logging out will be marked as read. Any thread that is updated whilst you are logged-out/offline will be marked unread as expected. This does seem a little odd but I always assumed it was a Cookie issue.

Are you talking about the colored icons for new posts since your last visit? If so, it does this automatically as Emily said. The next time you log on, the posts you have not read are no longer colored, but the title shows up in bold if that helps.
