Except for the actual architectural differences between the two sltos, AGP runs at 66MHz and PCI slots run 33MHz. This is why AGP cards are more expensive and look alot better graphically.

AGP slots are designed specifically for video cards. In fact they were designed to remove the video card from the pci bus. To provide a faster bus specifically to improve the performance of your video sub-system.

So currently the AGP is used to support your video card while the pci bus is used for other peripheral cards such as:

sound cards
network cards
modems
etc...

AGP cards also have direct access to system RAM which greatly improves performance when using features like frame buffering.

Just for the record, PCI does run at 66Mhz, but its a doubled 33Mhz. So its not a true 66Mhz like AGP.
