I don't preffer it in place of a proper offboard PCI sound card, but I believe its the best onboard out of the bunch...

Well I would say fine as well but then again, I never had a PCI sound card to compare it too. Now if only my lazy butt get off the chair and install it. I even have the audigy 2 from creative :P

My favorite onboard AC'97 is by Realtek. At least the ALC650 or better. Sounds great for music and most games.

Try onboard for a month and then switch to a PCI card. Onboard sound doesn't come close to the sound of my Audigy 2 card.

It's just about become "standered" on most boards...AC97... It does respectful for most uses. Nvidia's soundstorm I believe was one of the better intergrated audio's as well.

My thing with a motherboard has always been to get as much as possible outta CPU control. So I like to use "add on" cards with their own processors that can (if even to a slight extent) remove that load from the CPU itself. Plus depending on the add-on audio card? You can be amazed with some of the audio 'effects' and modes available.

For onboard audio? It's pretty decent..

Its all about the speakers you have.

If they cant take advantage of the card, no use in getting one.

Although getting a PCI card should take a little stress off of system resources.

Considering that an Audigy 2 can cost as much as some motherboards one would hope that was the case.
