Get your free hosts for images here (hotlinking allowed)

Postby peta_byte » Thu Oct 23, 2003 2:12 pm

Let's dedicate this thread for discussion of hosts that allow hotlinking (sometimes known as "remote linking") that folks here can use for their sigs or avatars. Please post your own if you have any.. thanks.

As for myself, I generally have no need for these.
Being a 56k'r, I usually turn off avatars and sigs in my profile.
so.. I'm posting this for you other folks here.. ones who don't feel the need to sign up for the 1&1 free storage that I posted. (500meg and does allow hotlinking) you can read that thread here.

I'll start out with the simplest ones :

http://pics.sector-19.com/
no details on size.. surely a no brainer here
---------
another simple one.. uniongamers.net
http://uniongamers.net/delayz/images/upload/
This form will allow you to upload a picture file and give you the URL and forum code to place your pic on our forums or any other forums. Please only .JPG files under 200KB (kilobytes). Please do not abuse this. Delayz Media does have limited space and bandwidth.

-------
http://www.ihateaol.co.uk/misc/upload.php

gotta love the URL.. no details
-------
the last real simple one..
http://www.sig-x.com/ (TOS) http://www.sig-x.com/TOS.html
Bandwidth on free accounts is limited to no more than 50 megabytes/month

-------
http://www.picturehost.co.uk/

50k size limit - no "adult" pictures
-------
http://picserver.student.utwente.nl/

New limits on PicServer2003 are:
total space: 15 MB,
maximum filesize: 200 kB
total files: 75.
GIF, JPG and PNG only
-------
http://www.auctionpix.co.uk/

ahhh.. shouldn't bother with this one, only good for 11 days.
would be good for your ebay images 'tho

same for this one.. 14 days 'tho
http://www.auctiontools.co.uk/
------
http://www.villagephotos.com/

Free users get space for 25 images
------
ok.. I got tired of reading TOS agreements and hitting
dead ends. Here are a few more that you can check into.
and if you're nice.. report back to us in this thread please.

Just a note on Pic/Avatar linking, if you use one of these places....

Try to keep images to a very small size, or as small as possible.
Most sites do have a bandwidth limit for thier users.
Not to mention, most forums do have an avatar size restriction.

Remember this fact:
Every time a user, or even a guest views a post here, or on another forum you belong to, your avatar gets downloaded from your hosting site to thier machine.

On some forums just a single post can get viewed hundreds, if not thousands of times in a month. This can rack up some bandwidth very quickly.

This is why most forums, including MB.Org have limits on avatar sizes.

So, just be aware of your image sizes, and how often they will be retrieved from your hosting site.

I think it has been downloaded 5000 times. Mine: 12638 times this month so far.

wow.. that's 9.6 meg.. even with a 763 byte pic.. so you have to figure about 20 meg/month. that's not too bad..

but to be fair to these places.. first off, keep your size down and second, don't post as much as evasive or Tulatin does..

I was kinda hoping someone else would take the initiative to look a bit more at the others or post ones that they've found..I took the time to look for these places but I don't want any of them to get "abused".. that only detracts from the generosity that these places have shown in allowing it in the first place. thx

If we find ones that state 100meg/month.. then we can assume it's fairly safe to use them..

I'll get off my soapbox now..
