I have an ASRock motherboard using American Megatrends bios. It will not boot from the usb unless I unplug the SATA drives. Is there any way to correct this?

Check in the BIOS that the 'legacy' USB feature is enabled. And select 'search all bootable paths' or otherwise stated.
Should be a message at the bottom of the screen, "Press any key to boot from @ drive" or similar. You have about 5 seconds to respond. If you do boot from a USB drive frequently, have that in the selected boot path, before the optical drive.
