have a bunch of these adapters laying around, and my brother needed one for his machine. he was initially using onboard video, so the all-digital adapter I gave him worked fine just for video.
so now he says he's using that adapter on an add-in videocard (he couldn't give me model number), and he says it transfers sound along with the video to an lcd monitor.

how is this possible? the dvi side of the adapter looks like this (as well as the hdmi end)...

He must have some sort of magic wand! The DVI connector is only for video.. no audio.
The only way to add audio would be to modulate the video signal and multiplex the audio into it.. but that would require a decoder on the other end! There are six standard types of DVI to VGA connectors, and also DVI to HDMI connectors. HDMI does carry both audio and video, in digital format.

well, that's what I thought, but he says it is the only connection going to the tv, and sound is going thru it.

then I found this...
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/30141 ... arry-audio

which led to this much longer thread... http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/25730 ... -conundrum
realize this conversation is 5 years ago... but it sure seems to lead to, YES, dvi can carry sound through a dvi->hdmi adapter and cable going to an hdmi device. I don't know the exactness of what pins are reconfigured or what, but it does happen. and my brother's experience is proof!

I was hoping someone here could link the current info on it, as I've been having problems with search results being definitive.

There are special cables with an HDMI connector on one end, and a DVI connector on the other end.. plus a mini audio plug lead.
But as to carrying both audio and video on a DVI port, not designed for that. Was never in the 'standards' design.

but this has nothing to do with those special cables. this is, and I repeat, IS a system that IS running video from a DVI port thru a dvi->hdmi adapter, and into an hdmi input on a tv, AND the sound from the source is being heard on the tv... WITH NO OTHER CABLE ATTACHED.

it's not a special adapter, there's no frequency modulation or multiplexing going on that needs decoding by expensive boxes or circuitry, it's not magic or sorcery... it just works.
I want to know how, but I can't find anything about it in my searches.

here's another good read...
http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/ ... bc3ceeaa2a

well, not great read, but it has more information about others who have successfully gotten audio thru dvi ports.

The VESA standards for DVI pinouts and use do not include audio in either analog or digital format. Just video.
Something is not being revealed in full with that system.
Yes, there are DVI to HDMI cables but they have the added audio "pigtail" with a mini phone plug.
The 6450 series has different features. Some have a VGA, DVI and HDMI output. Some have only two outputs.
If there is an audio driver chipset on the video card, it will tap the system bus for audio. Otherwise, there is a mini phone jack on the card body so use of resident audio features can be passed into the HDMI port.

"Something is not being revealed in full with that system."
that is always my first inclination, but I have confirmed with my brother that he is indeed not using any speaker set or other cables for audio... only the one adapter in the dvi port attached to an hdmi cable and leading to the tv. and I'm a pretty skeptical person, even I didn't believe it at first.

this particular 6450 has one dvi port and one DP port. for a long time amd cards have put an audio device on their graphics cards, as has NVidia.

the particular adapter and cable my brother is using does NOT have a stereo miniplug pigtail.

somehow it is sending audio thru the dvi port.

if you read the links, there are arguments about this very same thing... some people say it can't be happening, others saying IT IS happening and they are hearing audio thru that setup. so unless those people hearing the audio (like my brother) are ALL having delusional auditory hallucinations that just happen to match the audio that should go with the video, then I tend to believe it.
