Tin Whiskers!

Postby Karlsweldt » Wed Jan 01, 2014 8:17 am

Solder containing lead and tin has been in use for centuries. But lead is considered a health threat.. so solder lost its lead and is now commonly silver and tin. But the combination causes a problem.. effluents of silver and tin form "whiskers" that short circuits and cause failures!
Here is one article about the problem
For electronic circuits, perhaps "keeping the lead in" is needed. But for use in plumbing and other fields where food or water is contacted, "taking the lead out" is a good idea. It was a success with motor fuels, making a drastic improvement in air quality. But for all the failures with electronics, a disaster. Solder Types and Uses
F@H.. to solve mankind's maladies.. in our lifetimes!
