Bad Fan! Bad!!

Postby Karlsweldt » Fri Mar 08, 2013 7:05 am

Had found a bad capacitor on my old P4 system, and replaced same.
When testing the system before putting back in use, I noted some "sizzle" noises from the CPU cooling fan. It is a Cooler Master model, and the fan was starting to develop bad bearings. The fan is a "NMB" branded 2608GL-04W-B59 model, and is a ball-bearing type. Fortunately, had a near-identical fan on an unused heat sink, so did a swap. No joy, as the screw holes are not matching up!! Could only mount the fan with two upper screws, until I get an exact replacement.
Yes, even ball-bearing CPU fans can go bad. But the only 'fix' is replacement. Once the bearings get noisy, they will soon fail totally. Even if lubed, they don't work as if 'new'. Will have to research some sites to find a better price than what is noted in the NMB link!!!!

Anything with plastic blades has a flimsy bearing that will fail after 5-7 years of continuous use. No exceptions to that rule...
