May be a good solution, but ensure it meets the power requirements of the device, and has proper regulation.

Regulation of voltage is critical with most electronic circuits. More than 2% ripple or differences, and data flow can become corrupt. Irregular voltage levels are best kept within 1% of design. Current flow does vary with circuit load, but as long as voltage remains stable, few problems. Pure DC voltage is the ideal for computer power needs.
From the specs page on your regulator, note "Current - Output 800mA: Voltage - Dropout (Typical) 1.1V @ 800mA". This indicates that regulation falls off greatly at the peak of its output current limitations.

I see it has a TO-220 housing which is much bigger than a TO-92. Make sure you have plenty of space to fit it in and make sure you get the pinout right.
