Asus bios / mobo reporting wrong cpu temp? Author: tomed

I'm running an Asus P5AD2-E Premium (LGA775) with a 560 Prescott (3.6Ghz, 1MB L2 cache). I have 2GB of DDR2 Corsair 5400C4PRO. When I POST and go into BIOS' hardware monitor I get temperature readings ranging from 77.5 - 78.5 celcius. This is obviously way high. I go into Windows XP SP1 and the Asus PCPRobe as well as CPUcool report similar temps although when running idle in Windows XP SP1 my temps range from 63 - 69 celcius. When I do anything at all (open a simple app) temp climbs to over 73 celcius and I can't do anything without hassle (instability).

So, I put the machine into S3 standby and when it comes out from Windows standby the temps are reported as around 36 - 40 celcius in PCProbe and CPUCool. And when I run an app (any app or even Prime95 in torture mode) temps don't get above 44 celcius AND the system is stable!

Now, I can't believe something as innocuous as going in and coming out of system standby could alleviate a problem as serious as thermal conditioning which begs the questions - does anyone have any information on this or have a similar situation?

nVidia 6600GT PCI-Express Dual DVI
BIOS v1003 (dated 1/2005)
WD360 Raptor boot drive
Dual DiamondMax 10 300GB (RAID 0)

The LGA-775 3.6 GHz is not one I'd recommend. We tried using it as our primary test platform but it was unstable and we settled on the 3.4 EE. Our experiences are similar to Tom's http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20041114/index.html and yours...

After reading the review(s) on the P5AD2-E I rushed out and bought and boy have I been burned - flushed $2,800 down the toilet, but I'll be able to re-use some of the components.

i have the LGA775 560 3.6ghz CPU. the CPU does get extremely hot. it gets hotter than a 2.8ghz overclocked to 3.6ghz range.
