"The Radeon HD 5970 fully supports DX11 and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, which are two features that NVIDIA can't offer on any of their graphics cards. Those are two key features that have been driving video card sales for months and with more and more DirectX 11 title games coming out it would be safe to assume that more gamers will be making the move to AMD based graphics cards. Radeon HD 5970 is also very overclockable. This is partly due to the Overvolt tool as you can get even more performance out of this card. The ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card is in a league of its own and is clearly king of the hill. O Fermi, Fermi, wherefore art thou Fermi? NVIDIA better hope that their GT300 Fermi series of video cards pack a mean punch because they are going to need all the help they can get..."

link

Compared to PCs using integrated graphics that struggle with today’s increasingly graphical and GPU-computing workloads, systems outfitted with GT 240 offer great general gaming performance, Power Gaming (PhysX acceleration + 3D Vision), and GPU Computing at under $99. With the addition of a GeForce GT240, a PC can also provide smooth HD video playback from Bluray, DivX, and Flash 10.1 sources, while also facilitating seamless HD video creation and editing.
NVIDIA is launching a new mainstream graphics card today, aimed squarely at consumers in the market for a relatively low-cost upgrade from an integrated graphics solution or older entry-level GPU. The new GeForce GT 240, features a GPU outfitted with 96 processor cores, 8 ROP units, and 32 texture filtering units. In addition, the GT 240 GPU is manufactured using a 40nm process, it features a GDDR5 memory controller (that's also compatible with GDDR3), and unlike NVIDIA's current high-end GPUs, the GT 240 is DirectX 10.1 compatible.

Although its specifications aren't terribly high-end in light of NVIDIA's more powerful GeForces, the GT 240 is actually more advanced than its counterparts in a number of respects. Come on by and check it out...

link

NZXT Unleashes Tempest EVO Gaming Chassis

The Airflow King is reborn with advanced cooling performance, maximum expandability, and superior cable management

El Monte, CA – November 17, 2009 – NZXT, a company built on realizing the dreams of gamers worldwide, is proud to announce the Tempest EVO, a sleek, all black, steel mid tower gaming chassis. Building off of the original Tempest’s award winning design, the EVO brings advanced cooling power, expandability, and cable management. The Tempest EVO maximizes airflow circulation with Dual 120mm intake, side 120mm, and a rear 120mm fan. NZXT even redesigned the fan blades so they effectively deliver more air at lower noise levels. Additionally, the bottom mounted PSU provides better airflow and separation of heat from the CPU.

The Tempest EVO puts a premium on expandability with E-ATX support allowing for compatibility with higher end graphics cards, power supplies and server boards while the server-like HDD space holds up to 8 HDDs ensuring that enthusiasts can make significant upgrades to their system without having to replace the chassis. Installation and upgrades are a breeze with pre-drilled cable routing on the motherboard allowing for a cleaner look and improved airflow. The case also features added space behind the motherboard panel from a punched side panel design that allows for easy heatsink removal. Tempest EVO is well equipped for overclocking and watercooling enthusiasts with predrilled watercooling tube access and support for a dual 120mm radiator at the top panel.

“The original Tempest is one of our most successful designs due to its optimal airflow capabilities” said Johnny Hou, Chief Designer at NZXT. “With the additional improvements the Tempest EVO brings to the equation, it’s destined to be a top performer in its class.”

The Tempest EVO is available now at an MSRP of $99.99.
"This is a great SSD for those wanting a nice and snappy OS at a
reasonably low cost. That said, the 40GB capacity requires a bit of a
mentality shift as far as how you organize your files. Such a small
capacity means your videos and other media will need to be located
elsewhere. If running Vista or Windows 7, you may run out of space before
you get Office and a couple of games installed. If you can deal with
putting some of your stuff on a separate (spinning) drive, and place only
those things you want to run snappy on the SSD, you will likely be happy
with your purchase."

link

AMD 's Atom is Bobcat :: Posted by THRASHER2

Three years too late

AMD has revealed that its low power CPU is codenamed Bobcat and this is the CPU core that will be the part of 2011 notebook APU codename “Brazos”.

The company also said that Bobcat is a very low power design with a sub-1W capable power envelope that can score 90 percent of today’s mainstream performance in less than half silicon area.

It is also easy to reuse and what AMD didn’t tell you is that this CPU will be developed in 40nm bulk process as it will get DirectX 11 RV8x0 series 40nm graphics inside, as this is the point of APU to have CPU and GPU together. AMD claims SSE 1 to 3 and virtualisation which is nothing spectacular but it's still good to hear.

With the Bobcat, AMD plans to compete with Intel's Atom. However, by the time Bobcat launches, Atom will be three years old and some market reports see 130+ million Atoms / Netbooks in the market. AMD has to pull miracle to get OEMs and ODMs interested in its design.

AMD goes ARM like strategy where it plans to manufacture CPU on Bulk, even though it used Silicon on insulator for years now.

Let’s not forget that this interesting core is scheduled for some point in 2011, and when a company tells you a year it's highly likely that production and availability should occur later in the year rather than in January time.

The big issue is what Intel plans for its 2011 Atom successor.

link

Yaaay, more ads

While Google has grown into an advertising powerhouse, their hold on the mobile market hasn't been as potent, but the company's latest deal promises to change that. Google has announced the $750 million-worth purchase of AdMob, the company whose profile will significantly help Google in establishing itself as a mobile advertising giant as well.

AdMob is a company that seems to be tailored for Google, as they provide mobile advertisements in applications and web-browsing where their new owner isn't quite formidable, and Google obviously knows how to put their practice to good use. Their ads are pretty much on every consumer mobile OS, meaning that Google's mobile advertising won't be solely based on Android.

So, if, and mind you that’s a big if, there is someone, somewhere, who hasn't seen Google ads, then he surely will as soon as this deal is done.

link

Also replacing HD 4670 and HD 4650

AMD is using silly names such as Hemlock for its dual RV870, Cypress XT for the HD 5870 (a.k.a. RV870), while Cypress Pro is HD 5850 and so on.

The chip that is scheduled to launch in Q1 2010 is codenamed Redwood and it also comes in XT and Pro variants.

Redwood XT is a 40nm DirectX 11 part that should replace Radeon HD 4770 and Radeon HD 4670 cards in the upper part of mainstream market. Redwood Pro will be the slower version and it should replace Radeon HD 4650 cards in the lower part of mainstream market.

These two speed bumps of the Redwood chip in Pro (slower) and XP (faster) variations are releasing sometime in Q1 2010.

The king of the value market is named Cedar, and it should replace the Radeon HD 43x0 series.

link

Jensen exclaims passionate support for Apple products

Yesterday, Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO and President of Nvidia visited the luxurious state of Dubai on business matters to present a speech at the American University in Dubai (AUD). During his visit, he sat down with a few analysts from the media to discuss the current state of the IT industry as well as Nvidia’s products, goals and achievements.

During his talk, Jensen positioned himself in a surprising new light when he mentioned his incredibly passionate support for Apple products to the group of individuals in the room. “I’m all Apple,” he stated. “Apple uses the best technology for its [computers]…and says to its customers: if you buy a computer from us, you can be sure we have selected the best technology inside for you. That is their promise to consumers. Their promise to consumers isn’t [that] we’ve selected the best technology for you with the exception of what Intel allows us to use. That’s not their promise, and that’s why Apple uses the best technology where they want, whenever they want. And that’s why I’m all Apple! At home, it’s just Macs everywhere [with] NVIDIA’s technology in all of them but I [do] use Macs. My son has two Macs, my daughter has a Mac, there’s an extra Mac just in case, and my wife has a Mac. It’s just Mac, Mac, Mac! Because I know it’s got the best stuff inside.” [ShuffleGazine.com]

link

The drives should feature a write and read speeds of up to 16 and 30MB/s.

These are the top notch flash drives and are currently the best that Corsair has offer in its flash lineup. Both are going to be bundled with a Corsair dog tag and a USB extension cable. The only difference between the drives is in size as the 64GB version is a bit longer.

As we wrote before, the drives are already listed in Europe with a lowest price set at €78,76 for the 32GB and €149,03 for the 64GB version.

link

Just as the company anticipates its first week sales, we are also interested in the success of the card due to its history-making GPU design.

As we mentioned two weeks ago, EVGA launched its exclusive card (012-P3-1178-AR) at the Nvidia Halloween Launch Party in Santa Clara, marking the first time in history that two distinct Nvidia GPUs have been implemented on a single-PCB design. The card effectively combines the power of an Nvidia 55nm GT200b for graphics rendering with the power of an Nvidia 55nm G92b for PhysX rendering, all enclosed within a single convenient model.

link

Razer announces its Abyssus gaming mouse :: Posted by THRASHER2

Updated: Goes back to basics

Razer has announced a new gaming rodent, dubbed the Abyssus. The new mouse from Razer is quite interesting, and it has honestly surprised us, considering the fact that last two that came from Razer, either had a high price tag (Mamba) or way too many buttons for our taste (Naga).

Razer has decided to get back to the basics and this one is combines Razer's high-grade specifications with a simple three-button ambidextrous design. This of course also means that the new Abyssus will have a reasonable price as well.

Don't get us wrong as Razer didn't skimp out on the specifications, and we are still looking at a rodent that has a 3500dpi Precision 3.5G infrared sensor as well as Hyper-response buttons, Ultraslick Teflon feet, 2.1m cord, 1ms response time and scroll wheel with 24 click positions.

The Abyssus should be available pretty soon as it can already be pre-ordered over at Razerzone.com with a US $49.99 price tag while the estimated ship date is 12th of November, or tomorrow. Europe is less lucky as it will be available again soon but with a €49.99 price tag.

Update: Razer contacted us regarding the European price which should be listed at €39.99, and although it is still listed at €49.99 we are sure that Razer will fix that little glitch pretty soon.

link

Intel P55 chipset moves to B3 stepping next month :: Posted by THRASHER2

B2 and B3 will both support 32nm Clarkdale

According to internal sources at Intel, the company is readying to move its P55 chipset platform to B3 stepping early next month. Thankfully, the new stepping revision will not require motherboard manufacturers to make any physical hardware changes and will be implemented primarily to support future Core i7 and Core i5 processors on Socket LGA 1156.

Intel has explained that the current B2 stepping and upcoming B3 stepping are completely identical in physical size, fit, electrical, mechanical and thermal specifications. Samples have been available for motherboard manufacturers since October 2nd, and enthusiast consumers can expect initial commercial shipments of B3 revision P55 chipsets beginning on Monday, December 7th.

The B3 stepping itself includes new MM number and S-Spec numbers and will require manufacturers to implement minor firmware and BIOS updates. In particular, they will implement processor MRC and microcode updates in order to enable support for future processors.

As for consumers with the new stepping, Intel recommends a storage driver upgrade from Intel MSM 8.9 to Intel RST 9.5. The company also stressed that both B2 and B3 steppings of the Intel P55 chipset will support 32nm Clarkdale chips.

“Current P55 boards as well as new P55 boards should support Clarkdale,” said said George Alfs, an Intel spokesperson. “As always, end users should check with their board vendor before upgrading.” In other words, those of you with current B2 stepping motherboards will be able to run Core i5 32nm dual-core chips (Clarkdale) with BIOS updates that implement the new processor microcodes.

link

$2.7 billion cheque

Maker of printer ink which is more valuable than gold, HP has bought networking-gear maker 3Com for $2.7 billion in cash.

The move helps HP bulk up its product line amid a broader push by the few remaining technology giants to turn themselves into one-stop technology shops. By buying 3Com, which has not been doing so well lately it makes HP a direct rival of Cisco. Cisco has moved into servers, previously HP and Dell's turf. HP had a pop at Cisco with investments in networking, but this one is a biggie.

David Donatelli, H-P's vice president in charge of the corporate-computer division, said 3Com has a better set of networking products for large corporate clients than H-P currently sells and a market share of more than 30 per cent in the China networking market. HP's cunning plan is to sell "complete systems" made of chips, computers, storage devices and software.

link

If you think ATI's Eyefinity, with its multi-display support, is an impressive piece of kit, then the M9188 from Matrox is something that will really make your life a bit more complicated, as it comes with support for up to eight displays.

Matrox's new card uses PCI-Express x16 slot and features 2GB of memory. As this one will not impress you with its gaming capabilities, but it certainly will make those multi-display scenarios much easier thanks to eight Mini DisplayPort connectors with included DVI and DisplayPort adapters, as well as the support for resolutions of up to 2560x1600 per output.

Multiply that number by eight and you'll be quite impressed with what this card is capable to do, don't you think? If that is not enough for you, it is possible to use a pair of M9188 cards to get sixteen outputs and an even higher output resolution.

This card is made for professional monitoring environments and it comes with a professional price tag of US $1995. If this is too much for your budget, Matrox is preparing another one that will feature "only" Mini DP outputs and 1GB of memory with a US $259 price tag.

link

The card features 720 stream processors, a 128-bit memory interface and reference clocks of 700Mhz for the core and 4600MHz for 1GB of GDDR5 memory.

The card also comes with DVI, D-Sub and HDMI outputs, and should appear in retail pretty soon with a price tag of around €120. We are quite sure that Asus will show a non-reference HD 5770 as well, but we are not sure that it will be a part of Formula Edition series.

link

“When it comes to Solid State Drives (SSD’s), it seems like many of the offerings available are from companies known for memory, not storage. This is because unlike traditional hard drives SSD’s have no moving parts and use NAND memory chips. So you would expect a company like Crucial to have a line of SSD drives, and they do! Actually our first SSD review here at ThinkComputers was a Crucial Drive. Today we will be looking at the 256GB M225 Solid State drive that is based off the ever popular Indilinx Barefoot controller.
Many gamers swear by the proven stability that is Windows XP, but there's a new player on the market: Windows 7. While Windows XP is heralded by some as the best OS to ever come from Microsoft, Vista is the Windows ME of the 21st Century. Enter Windows 7. Built on the proven NT platform and in many ways appearing much like Vista, that's where the similarities end. Today, Benchmark Reviews will take a look at some of the different methods of installation, and hopefully clear up some of the confusion many of you may be having. I think some people will be surprised by how easy it can be, plus we will show you how to possibly bypass having to reinstall Windows XP or Vista during an upgrade.

link

"All it takes is one idea to make millions. That is the first thing that came to mind when I opened the package from Luxa2 containing today's review item, the H1-Touch Mobile Holder. True to it's name, this product does one thing and one thing only: holds your mobile device. Developed by Luxa2 (a division of Thermaltake), the H1-Touch was designed with Apple's iPhone / iPod Touch in mind but seemingly could be used to hold most any handset. Priced at $50 at a popular online reseller, one has to question whether the H1-Touch offers any tangible benefits or if it's simply an overpriced novelty item."

link

"This Need For Speed: Shift Patch isn't out yet, but we managed to work our magic and get both the latest beta drivers from AMD and the game patch from EA to see how much smoother and better the game play will be for AMD video card users. We also toss in some NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 graphics cards into the mix to check out the SLI scaling since the patch is optimized for multi-GPUs. The results we are about to see will be interesting because if we see a huge jump we know that the game wasn't properly optimized for AMD graphics cards from the start. Could that have been because of NVIDIA marketing dollars like AMD implies or the fact that AMD didn't work closely enough with the game developer like NVIDIA suggests? We'll leave that question alone and just focus on the game title..."

link

The TV TrickleSaver is simple to use, just plug your TV into one of its outlets and then your other devices into its other outlet and you’re ready to go. If you haven't thought of it already, you might consider converting it to more than one format. That way, you can watch it on the road, at the Doctor's office, at work on lunch, family dinners and even at the movies. Furthermore, if you are like most people, chance are you have more than one media player. Video iPods, PSP's, Xbox 360, PS3 and countless other 3rd party players and few if any have a common format. If you are a true fanatic and must have your obsession on every one of them, then WinXDVD is probably a bit of software you should be interested in. Even if you're only interested in copying a movie to your psp or to an .avi file, you'll probably want to read on about it too.

link

"In past articles we have delivered plenty of file-system benchmarks from testing out EXT4 to Btrfs to NILFS2. We have also delivered benchmarks from traditional hard drives to solid-state drives. One area though where we have not published any file-system benchmarks is for USB flash drives. Most users end up staying with the default FAT32 file-system for flash drives, but are there any performance advantages to using EXT3, EXT4, XFS, Btrfs, or ReiserFS? We have the benchmarks today to share atop the latest Linux 2.6.32 kernel build."

link

"Compared to even the latest CPU and Graphics hardware, the Spurs Engine held its own. Though testing different encoding/transcoding types and programs can be quite a headache, it’s easy to see that the Leadtek WinFast PxVC1100 is an MPEG-2/H.264 transcoding card can benefit those who do large amounts of this type of work. While there are only a couple of different formats to be used, they process very quickly and have outstanding quality. I have seen a lot of questions about taking SD quality video and converting to an HD format and most are answered with “don’t waste your time because it will be the same quality.” Well with the Spurs Engine, that answer can be thrown out. While taking SD quality video and reaching the quality of an original HD source would be impossible, the content was very clearly much higher quality than the source. Best of all was that this process was quick, encoding at about 20% faster than real time playback..."

link

Xigmatek - A name that needs no introduction, But the first things that come to mind are CPU coolers, Right? A relatively young company, founded in 2005, Xigmatek has made some great quality coolers, 2 of which featured and performed very well in the Q2 best CPU cooler performance review here at Benchmark Reviews, Today's review focuses on the Xigmatek Midgard CPC-T55DB-U02 Computer Case, Big on features and while not an overly expensive case it is still closer to the top end of what I would call a Budget case. Tool free design, Midgard-W was designed by gaming and cooling thinking within tool-free hard drives and add-on card installation, easy installation CPU cooler back plate window, four pipe holes for water cooling system and seven cooling fan space at most. This case is certainly beautiful to look at, but looks are for the vain, Features and quality are essential to the success of a product. Will you be using this case in your next build? ! Come and take a closer look to see if this is the case ticks all the boxes for You.

link

I came home today and found a rather large package from Azza waiting for me. It is the Azza Helios 910, an ATX mid-tower case in the lower level price range, but with the mid to higher level of quality and sustenance. This is one of their cases that I wasn’t really familiar with, and my anticipation of ripping open the box to take a closer look got the better of me. Before I could do this I have to set up my little photo studio to make sure I get plenty of pictures for everyone out there. Now this is a bit of a slow process and it was driving me crazy. Someday I’ll get some extra space and money and try to set up something permanent. Until then, I suffer my Christmas like anticipation of opening boxes. My waiting paid off, as soon as I pulled it out I was in love with the black on black exterior/interior. Yes folks this is a completely painted, no bare metal case!

link

Benchmark Reviews has put a plethora of storage enclosures and systems through their paces and all of the predecessors fell neatly into readily recognizable categories. The StarTech SATADOCK22UE is a horse of a slightly different color offering features that bridge the existing product categories it's neither a case nor storage array, but has the capacity to allow access to single data drives as well as two drives independently or as a RAID array. It's a niche product with stealth appeal for main stream users who think outside the box. The SataDock product line comes in 4 flavors: single drive USB only desktop bay (SATADOCKU2E), single drive USB & eSATA desktop bay (SATADOCKU2), 5.25" Bay Dual Drive eSATA (SATADOCK525) and the top of the line dual drive, dual eSATA desktop dock SATADOCK22UE which we will be reviewing. While no doubt the intended audience for the SataDock product line is mainly corporate or professional P! C repair and maintenance organizations, this small wonder has the potential to simplify the lives of a much broader audience if they can related to it's less obvious uses.

link

"Earlier this year we reviewed the SilverStone Raven RV01 and loved this high-end computer chassis. We did not think it was quite superior to the SilverStone Temjin TJ10 that has been our favorite for years, but now SilverStone is out with the Raven RV02.
"This board's overclocking achievements were some of the best we've
been able to produce out of any P55 board we've currently tested. While the
overall voltage settings seem to be on par for the needs of experienced
overclockers, we did notice some stability issues with the DRAM's timings
and power configurations. Typically, we've had success setting the DRAM
ratio at its lowest setting and everything else to auto, but during our
overclocking experience with the P55-UD6 we had to set things up a bit
differently."

link

This card has a factory overclocked core and shader clock speeds, which should help boost performance over the standard clock speeds of 625MHz and 1360MHz. The EVGA GeForce GT 220 SSC DDR3 has a core clock speed of 671MHz and a shader clock of 1458MHz. This is just over a 7% clock frequency boost on the GPU, so that should help out performance on the card's 48 stream processors..."

link
