Today we will be taking a look at the new HIS and Sapphire 5970's and as they sent us two of the cards apiece we felt it would be a good time to to cover Crossfire X configurations - for those of you rich enough to be able to afford two of these monster graphics cards. We also overclock our watercooled Core i7 processor to 4.1 ghz and the memory to 1800mhz to mirror a real life environment for a potential customer of two of these high end boards - we want CPU limiting at a minimum.

link

Benchmark Reviews has monitored the network storage industry for several years now, and the same three features have always held the highest demand: speed, data redundancy, and simple operation. QNAP has earned the title of NAS pioneer, not by being the first to have a network attached storage (NAS) device on the market, but by being the first to consistently offer fast Gigabit Ethernet speeds with failover, RAID hard drive functionality, and a diverse feature-rich user interface. In this article, Benchmark Reviews test the QNAP TS-419P Turbo NAS based on the Marvell 6281 'Kirkwood' processor.

link

If I kept an OEM adapter around for every laptop I had ever serviced, I would have a pirate chest full of tangled booty. Thankfully we have manufacturers who provide us with a simpler solution: the Universal Adapter. Some offerings are cheap and flimsy, while others are quality hardware that make themselves invaluable tools. Today we take a look at the Cooler Master SNA95 Slim Notebook Adapter to see which of these categories it falls into."

link

"The BlacX Duet we have on hand today is the third in the BlacX series of hard drive docking stations from Thermaltake. We first saw the BlacX at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show and got our hands on a review sample a month later. We came away from that review very impressed with the concept and implementation, although USB-only transfer left us wanting more. The second coming of the BlacX, dubbed the SE version, featured a 4-port USB hub but still failed to deliver eSATA transfer capability. With the latest release of the BlacX, Thermaltake has done away with the 4-port USB hub, added a second slot that allows for two drives to be mounted simultaneously and finally added eSATA compatibility. This is looking more like the BlacX we hoped for nearly two years ago."

link

For the last few weeks we have been fielding our readers concerns about a shortage of HD5000 series cards, particularly the 5850, 5870 and the new 5890 - all of which have won top awards at DriverHeaven.

We managed to have a chat with one of the top men in AMD, John Byrne - Vice President of Worldwide GPU and CPU sales. We brought up the point that many enthusiasts can still not get a hold of one of their new mid to high end 5 series cards.

"Yes, we are impacted by TSMC's continued problems with production at the 40 nm process, however we feel we are tracking reasonably well to where we expected to be at this point, thanks in large part to our early start with 40 nm process technology with the ATI Radeon HD 4770. Yields for the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series, our most complex ASIC to date, are only slightly off from the aggressive targets we set. At the same time, we are actually tracking above target for the production of the ATI Radeon HD 5700 series.

In the very near future, as we overcome supply constraints, we will be increasing shipments of 5800 series graphics processors by roughly an order of magnitude, moving from thousands of units shipped per week to tens of thousands. This should alleviate some of the pent-up demand.

link

"The graphics solution world is constantly evolving with visual quality being stepped up at an ever-growing exponential rate. The launch of Windows 7 and with it the tantalising prospect of DirectX 11 games is perhaps not so much just a single step up but a whole flight of stairs designed to deliver unparalleled graphics quality.

With nVidia sliding by the way side, ATI is setting about monopolising the market rolling out numerous members of its 5 series cards, each of which offers a different price/performance ratio, following the main launch of the 5870 – a card which packed some serious performance and certainly turned heads at the beginning of the DirectX 11 era.

However, with DirectX 11 games still very much on the horizon and price of the 5870 way over budget for many enthusiasts, the inevitable introduction of the 5850 followed shortly. Based on the same RV870 core, codenamed Cypress, but located inside the $250 price bracket, the 5850 should consolidate the performance achieved by its bigger brother placing it in the upper mid-range section so as to push all the buttons for DX11 enthusiasts."

link

Eyefinity Challenge in Dallas, TX - AMD, HardOCP, 100 gamers, five ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity boxes, 5 single display boxes, and Call of Duty 4 team deathmatch. You got to like that. And one Eyefinity box to play Call of Duty 5 on projected onto three screens giving you over 24 feet of horizontal pixel real estate.

"There is one huge thing that sucks about Eyefinity though, and that is getting you, yes you, to understand its impact on your gaming experience without actually using it. The great authors of our time could hammer the technology with adjectives for days, and until you sit down and game on it, you likely are not going to "get it." We laid it out in our Eyefinity review, "If you get chance, don't take our word for it, please go experience it..." But just how the hell are you supposed to do that?"

link

It does everything it
promises, it does not waste the consumers' hard earned dollars by including
a lot of superfluous extras that may or may not be used, and the build
quality should allow it to run for years in even the most sweltering of
cases imagined.

This afternoon I heard that wonderful sound, a doorbell ringing to let me know that a package from Azza had arrived. Today was my lucky day, the Azza Solano 1000R was heading for my test bench. I’ve been lucky enough to review several cases, even a couple from Azza, and the one thing I’ve most requested seeing was a painted interior and rear. I know it seems like such a small thing, but for me it shows they are putting out a quality product and they didn’t cut corners to play a market pricing game. After taking a look at the box I was surprised to find they had listened to me and a fully painted interior and rear awaited me, painted in dark red, which is why this case is called the Solano 1000R. As I’ve mentioned before, I realize this comes at an added expense, so let’s see if some well painted parts are worth the extra $$’s.

link

"The Thecus N0204 miniNAS is said to be the world’s smallest fully-featured NAS device. Measuring in at just 132 x 88 x 63 mm exterior, one could easily mistake the N0204 as a regular external hard drive. However, look closer and you will see a very capable two-bay NAS device that fits right in the palm of your hand. Thecus manages to make this work by using two 2.5” SATA hard disks, providing up to 1TB of storage. That means that this device uses laptop SATA hard drives or 2.5" Solid-State Drives (SSDs), which has some pros and cons as you could imagine. At just $149.99 plus shipping, the Thecus N0204 miniNAS also just happens to be the least expensive 2-bay network attached device sold at e-tailers like Newegg.com among others..."

link

The first time we looked at Fusion-io's ioDrive product, we offered the notion that it was a "disruptive technology", that had the potential to set the industry on its ear. Of course the ioDrive is an enterprise-class product that showed the significant potential of PCI Express direct-attached SSD storage but its cost was such that the mainstream market couldn't possibly even begin to justify it, no matter what the upside performance looked like. And then of course we heard of Fusion-io's more consumer-targeted play, the ioXtreme, which debuted at E3 this past summer. Obviously, E3 is a consumer electronics entertainment venue so it became abundantly clear that Fusion-io wasn't only productizing their technology for the enterprise space but for the enthusiast, workstation professional and power user as well.

Today we've got a full deep-dive look at Fusion-io's ioXtreme PCI Express Solid State Drive. Weighing in at a pricey $899 for 80GB (standard card), it's definitely still a high ticket item but it's at least approachable now, for those of you that have the need for speed as they say. Just how much speed? And what about RAIDing a couple of these bad boys together?

link

The original Intel Core i7 chip, launched in November 2008, has set the desktop performance standard by which all other are judged. That remains the case today, as the fastest consumer chip is the Bloomfield-based Core i7 975 Extreme Edition.

Intel has since distilled the architecture and released the slightly trimmed-down Lynnfield core in September 2009.

The chip giant has done a 'marvellous' job in confusing customers with Core i7 branding that spans both architectures, but separating them is simple if you know the socket on which they're based.

All full-fat Core i7 chips ship with an LGA1366 socket, but the newer Core i7 860 and 870 CPUs use the LGA1156 form factor.

One advantage that the older LGA1366 chips enjoy is the ability of their memory-controller to interface with three DDR3 memory channels at once. The triple-channel design means that many of the high-end supporting motherboards, run on the X58 chipset, have six DIMM slots as standard.

This preamble sets the scene for Kingston's latest DDR3 kit, aimed at users who have a Core i7 LGA1366 system and want to maximise on the system memory footprint when using a 64-bit operating system.

Officially released today, the 12GB HyperX kit is designed for the X58 platform and is comprised of six 2GB modules that are guaranteed to run in tandem at 1,600MHz CL9.

Let's take a look link

"Yes, the BlackBerry Storm 2 is a vast improvement over the original BlackBerry Storm smartphone. However, that isn't saying much because, as befitted its name, the latter handset was pretty much a disaster. Worth noting, though: The Storm 2 does have a capacitive touchscreen with software that mimics tactile resistance, unlike the clunky mechanical screen found on its predecessor. Inside, the cell phone also has more features and memory. But even if the Storm 2 steps its game up, so what? If you're looking for a new Verizon wireless smartphone and your company doesn't require you to own a BlackBerry, you're much better off with one of the far superior Motorola Droid phones."

link

Today I will be looking at the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850, the latest successor to two great video cards, the HD 3850 and HD 4850. When I first received an HD 3850, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. I called the HD 4850 “the most significant product to enter the market in 2008”, and I still stand by that comment. Will the Radeon HD 5850 do its predecessors proud?
"If you haven't heard of Phiaton before, that's OK - most folks haven't. That's because the manufacturer just broke into the headphone scene about a year ago and you don't often see their products in your local Big Box Mart. But while Phiaton is a new name to the headphone market, their Korean based parent company, Cresyn, is not. They've been manufacturing the parts that go into some of the world's most popular headphones for decades. Now, following a popular trend, the manufacturer has decided to create their own line of headphones and market them to consumers."

link

Today we will be taking a look at the Powercolor Radeon HD 5970 2GB and putting it through its paces in a selection of real world gaming tests, including the recently released Modern Warfare 2. In addition to this we will cover GPU computing and high definition playback as well as having a play with the surprise inclusion of an official voltage tweaking tool. This little application may well make this product a favourite with enthusiasts who want to get the most from their purchase.

link

Two Kingston 40GB V Series Boot Drive SSDs in RAID 0 :: Posted by THRASHER2

"One of the negatives of the SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drive is the fact that it doesn't support TRIM functions in Windows 7. That really isn't a big deal as we don't know of any RAID drivers that do support TRIM. If you plan on running SSDs in RAID, you have already accepted that you want to give up TRIM support anyway. Other than that one negative, running a pair of Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drives in RAID 0 seemed like a solid setup. We found that the SATA 6Gbps controller isn't RAID bootable, but for someone with an Intel ICH10R chipset, this setup would be ideal and fun to play around with. The next time we try to play with a RAID setup we'll stick to the ICH10R or just spend the extra money and pick up a dedicated hardware RAID controller. Being able to hit 370MB/s read speeds in the ATTO benchmark pretty much sums up our experience with the Kingston SSDNow V Series 40GB Boot Drives in RAID!"

link

AMD seems to be on to a winner in recent months. In September 2009 its graphics arm, ATI, released the DX11 Radeon HD 5870 GPU. A neater, cleaner design than the decent Radeon HD 4000-series, the £300 card is our choice for readers looking for a high-end gaming card that has practically all the bases covered.

A week later, the company released the trimmed-down Radeon HD 5850, ostensibly the same GPU but with reduced clock-speeds and a slight snip of the architecture. Move forward again by a couple of weeks and the mid-range Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 filled out the £100-£150 space.

link

ATI Radeon HD 5970 Dual-GPU Powerhouse Review :: Posted by THRASHER2

AMD's "Sweet Spot" GPU strategy over the last few years has been fairly predictable. Instead of producing the biggest, most powerful GPU possible--yields be damned--the company sets out to produce a relatively high-end GPU, using a cutting edge fabrication process, that hits a proverbial sweet spot between cost and performance. Then derivatives, and even multiples, of that GPU are used to flesh out a top-to-bottom line-up of graphics cards, that hit a broad range of price points.

It began with the RV670, which powered the single-GPU based Radeon HD 3870 and dual-GPU Radeon HD 3870 X2--hence the X2. Then came the RV770, which powered the Radeon HD 4870 and eventually the Radeon HD 4870 X2. The strategy has obviously paid off, as AMD is once again a price/performance leader in the GPU space, after some not-so-great performances like the R600, better known as the Radeon HD 2900 XT. Knowing their strategy, it should almost come as no surprise that the graphics card we'll be showing you today, the Radeon HD 5970, has come to fruition. Although it doesn't follow the same naming convention as AMD's previous dual-GPU powered cards, the Radeon HD 5970 is nonetheless powered by a pair of ATI "Cypress" Radeon HD 5800 series GPUs, linked together on a single PCB by a PCI Express bridge, very much like previous X2 iterations. Come on by and check it out...

link

ATI now dominates the graphics industry with their DirectX 11 Radeon HD 5000-series video cards, which allows them to enjoy current-generation gaming on Windows 7 and Vista. The ATI Radeon HD 5870 has already beat the worn and weathered GeForce GTX 285, just as the Radeon HD 5850 and HD5770 do at their respective price points. By combining two Cypress XT GPUs together on one PCB, the ATI ! Radeon HD 5970 video card will now compete against the very best NVIDIA can offer: the GeForce GTX 295. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests the 'unlocked' Hemlock GPU against the top graphics products available and demonstrates just how much ground AMD has gained in a few short months.

link

If you are any of these individuals, our next review subject is just what you need. The Thermaltake BlacX Duet is a must have on your work bench. There are many hard drive docking stations out there. Visit any large computer store and you will see just what I mean. The Duet has one major advantage over the rest, dual opening for hard drives. Great for those that need to browse several drives or simply transfer data from one drive to another. Thermaltake started the whole docking station thing, but today they have taken it a step farther.

link

Earlier today we took a look at AMD's Radeon HD 5970 graphics card. Comprised of two HD 5800-class GPUs on one board, its buttery-smooth performance at a 2,560x1,600 resolution made it, easily, the fastest gaming card on the planet.

But what if that's not enough? How about hooking two of them up for perverse performance. We've done just that and compared them the creme de la creme of the graphics world.

Get ready for mind-numbing numbers as we take a look at the very best PC graphics hardware has to offer.

link

The TwoZip gets it’s name because it has two zippers on it for the two compartments, one large one for the hard drive and one for the cable basically. It’s nicely made of durable cloth, with two compartments that are slightly padded and lined with a soft material, and it features heavy duty zippers as well.
"The Radeon HD 5970 fully supports DX11 and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, which are two features that NVIDIA can't offer on any of their graphics cards. Those are two key features that have been driving video card sales for months and with more and more DirectX 11 title games coming out it would be safe to assume that more gamers will be making the move to AMD based graphics cards. Radeon HD 5970 is also very overclockable. This is partly due to the Overvolt tool as you can get even more performance out of this card. The ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card is in a league of its own and is clearly king of the hill. O Fermi, Fermi, wherefore art thou Fermi? NVIDIA better hope that their GT300 Fermi series of video cards pack a mean punch because they are going to need all the help they can get..."

link

NVIDIA is launching a new mainstream graphics card today, aimed squarely at consumers in the market for a relatively low-cost upgrade from an integrated graphics solution or older entry-level GPU. The new GeForce GT 240, features a GPU outfitted with 96 processor cores, 8 ROP units, and 32 texture filtering units. In addition, the GT 240 GPU is manufactured using a 40nm process, it features a GDDR5 memory controller (that's also compatible with GDDR3), and unlike NVIDIA's current high-end GPUs, the GT 240 is DirectX 10.1 compatible.

Although its specifications aren't terribly high-end in light of NVIDIA's more powerful GeForces, the GT 240 is actually more advanced than its counterparts in a number of respects.

NZXT Unleashes Tempest EVO Gaming Chassis

The Airflow King is reborn with advanced cooling performance, maximum expandability, and superior cable management

El Monte, CA – November 17, 2009 – NZXT, a company built on realizing the dreams of gamers worldwide, is proud to announce the Tempest EVO, a sleek, all black, steel mid tower gaming chassis. Building off of the original Tempest’s award winning design, the EVO brings advanced cooling power, expandability, and cable management. The Tempest EVO maximizes airflow circulation with Dual 120mm intake, side 120mm, and a rear 120mm fan. NZXT even redesigned the fan blades so they effectively deliver more air at lower noise levels. Additionally, the bottom mounted PSU provides better airflow and separation of heat from the CPU.

The Tempest EVO puts a premium on expandability with E-ATX support allowing for compatibility with higher end graphics cards, power supplies and server boards while the server-like HDD space holds up to 8 HDDs ensuring that enthusiasts can make significant upgrades to their system without having to replace the chassis. Installation and upgrades are a breeze with pre-drilled cable routing on the motherboard allowing for a cleaner look and improved airflow. The case also features added space behind the motherboard panel from a punched side panel design that allows for easy heatsink removal. Tempest EVO is well equipped for overclocking and watercooling enthusiasts with predrilled watercooling tube access and support for a dual 120mm radiator at the top panel.

“The original Tempest is one of our most successful designs due to its optimal airflow capabilities” said Johnny Hou, Chief Designer at NZXT. “With the additional improvements the Tempest EVO brings to the equation, it’s destined to be a top performer in its class.”

The Tempest EVO is available now at an MSRP of $99.99.
"This is a great SSD for those wanting a nice and snappy OS at a
reasonably low cost. That said, the 40GB capacity requires a bit of a
mentality shift as far as how you organize your files. Such a small
capacity means your videos and other media will need to be located
elsewhere. If running Vista or Windows 7, you may run out of space before
you get Office and a couple of games installed. If you can deal with
putting some of your stuff on a separate (spinning) drive, and place only
those things you want to run snappy on the SSD, you will likely be happy
with your purchase."

link
