Definitely backup anything important before touching anything. If you don't you are asking for grief. The best case scenario for this would be to reformat and partition your drive before installing XP or Linux. I realize this isn't always possible - however be prepared to have to reinstall XP anyway...

I highly advise against repartitioning your Windows partition from the Linux install. The best thing to do is when setting up Windows just use part of the drive for the install, reserving the rest for the Linux install. Well you can view NTFS under Linux with no problem. The problem comes in if you want to write to your NTFS partition from Linux. That's when it's not reliable and frankly not advisable.
