Re: Laptop crashed, tried reboot, wont start.

CPU overheating due to thermal compound drying out completely, or most likely fan and heat sink gummed up with dust. I would ditch Vista completely, get rid of the hard drive if it is SATA and replace it with an SSD, the install a free operating system like Ubuntu or Debian to keep it up to date. C...

Re: Laptop crashed, tried reboot, wont start.

I managed to get the laptop to boot. I removed the battery, pressed the power button for 30 seconds, then plugged the power cord in. I started up the laptop without the battery. "It seemed to load up fine". So I tried downloading a newer copy of Free AVG. After it installed, I tried to rem...

Sounds good. I'll check some of those out. 2-3TB models would be fine.

Thx again for your help. :)

Re: Dropped USB External Hard Drive

Ok, so using TestDisk I managed to get the files I needed off the hard drive copied and moved. :) I really would have "liked to save" this hard drive. But it looks like this thing is toast. :? I tried to format the hard drive. First using Win10 then trying Ubuntu. Neither would work. All t...

Re: Dropped USB External Hard Drive

Is this the right program?

I've read the TestDisk walkthroughs, but I'm not sure what I need to select next. IE: Change type, list files, add partition, etc?

Re: Dropped USB External Hard Drive

Easus Recovery vs Recuva?? What are the benefits of each? Do they do other useful things? Which one works better? I tried the "free" versions to see if the files were reachable. One software found like 360 files. The hard drive I need to work with is 3TB, but doesn't have anywhere near tha...

Re: Dropped USB External Hard Drive

Remove the drive from the enclosure, put in a bag and seal. Stick it in the freezer, I usually leave it overnight. Get one of these: Drive Dock. Stick the drive in it and see if it reads. If it does recover your data as quickly as possible and bin the drive. Toshiba and Seagate have this really, re...

Re: Dropped USB External Hard Drive

Will do. Hopefully one or the other solves my issue. Then I can scrap the drive.
