Re: Laptop crashed, tried reboot, wont start.

Your CPU is 64bit so you will be able to run an up to date distro. I would get cheap SSD and upgrade the RAM (if you haven't already done so) to 4Gb (2 x 2GB DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 SODIMM) cost about $13 which will improve speed. Distro wise for the windows look and feel, ZorinOS is good another is q4...

Re: Laptop crashed, tried reboot, wont start.

Replacing hard drive is pretty easy on laptops. Cheap SSD (Kingston, SANDISK) 120Gb are about $20. Ubuntu = free and you can run whatever browser you want on it apart from Edge or Safari. Can also run KODI and VLC to play videos, but install Ubuntu_restricted_extras (codecs to play DVD). Dust usuall...

Re: Laptop crashed, tried reboot, wont start.

CPU overheating due to thermal compound drying out completely, or most likely fan and heat sink gummed up with dust. I would ditch Vista completely, get rid of the hard drive if it is SATA and replace it with an SSD, then install a free operating system like Ubuntu or Debian to keep it up to date.

Re: Formatting SSD

NTFS - Windows 10 will try and avoid formatting in Fat32, it would rather use exFat - to do with GPT (for drives over 2Tb). I had to use RUFUS to create bootable FAT32 drives and Easus to make Fat32 hard drives (for removal).

Re: Video Card

Reseat the card, make sure if it requires external power it is plugged in. Make sure the PCI slot next to the card is free.

Re: Reinstallation of Windows 10

If it is an OEM Windows 10 install, you don'y need a key code. Download the latest Windows 10 using their tool and install it to a minimum 8Gb pen drive. To reinstall, boot from that and install. Once installed windows will activate based on the hardware signature. I have lost count the amount of ti...

Re: Laptop noise

Yes, a virus can delete files and affect the sound card. Hardware wise if the CPU fan is being noisy, it can sound like a siren sometimes throttling up and down. Most likely a virus me thinks.

Re: Laptop does not recognize USB (flash drives or transfer

Try this: 1. Open the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter after each line in order to run it: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 cd cd windows\system32 start devmgmt.msc 2. Then Device Manager should start. Click View and choose Show hidden devices. 3. Now you need to expand...

Re: Fan header failure

Obvious, but are the BIOS settings correct, sometimes you can turn the fans off. Also have you run it with a fan header to molex connector to make sure the board is ok?
