have you checked the board for bad capacitors... bulging, or oozing?

are you still experiencing that you cannot get to the repair section on your xp install disc?
if somehow you can get that repair section to show up, you could goto command prompt and do a "fixmb ...

before you try the new hdd... did you unplug its connection and plug them back in? or try a new sata cable... just a little back to the basics stuff.
also have you dl'd the hdd manufacturer's tool ...

if you unplug the printer, does the unkown device go away? i'm guessing you might have changed usb ports with it, and maybe a small item (maybe a usb port directly on the printer) on the printer is n ...
