Would the CD-ROM<->HDD read/write be faster
Technically yes. If you have two IDE devices on their own IDE channel, alone, and set to 'master', they would operate faster.

I personally barely build PCs anymore. Just dish out Dell and HP business machines to the masses. They break, I get warrantied parts. Its the way things are now. Gone are the days of the DIY mostly..

Sounds like its booting off the hard drive, before booting from the optical drive. It was likely erased before it went to the pawn shop.

Hit F11 on boot, see if that loads the restore utility.

I found manual in deep archives of internet, it's for FastFame 650BX, but it match to my KM650B (no differences at all). big grin

Looks like a match. Found a manual within a few google clicks.

I know there are IDE cards, but I would on board due to concerns for drivers and possible boot issues to use that drive as a boot drive if I need to.
I'm running XP and would like to stay that way ...
