You need 16 chips on 256MB sticks and 8 chips on 128MB sticks. Both must have 8x16 internal organisation.
Some memory manufacturers still supply i440BX compatible RAM but prices seem to be high. Ask your local dealer and have a look at Ebay or similar sites.

A classic Athlon should work without problems bu a Thunderbird Slot-A above ~750MHz only with a small mod. If you have the K7V-T then the T-Bird runs well without mod.

Maybe the Bios is confused because of mixing PC-3200 with PC-2700. Try manual memory timings set to 166 MHz or DDR-333 or PC-2700. With three sticks of memory you may have to reduce timings for stability. Make sure you install the two 256MB sticks in one channel and the single 512MB in the other cha...
