Not all server computers are designed for handling many motherboards like a server rack. In Win has designed an inexpensive (under $60) case that is designed to have heightened security and the ability to use SSI (Server System Infrastructure) CEB (Compact Electronics Bay) motherboards which are a little bigger than the ATX form factor. These boards are designed to work with value servers and workstations around the Intel XEON processor.

One of the issues with building systems is the use of tools to install the various components of the system. In Win uses a tool-less installation system for their ODDs, FDDs and I/O slots. Front panel and tool-free for the side covers as well. One consideration in the design of a server case is the possibility of a large number of HDDs. The PE 689 can have up 11 3.5” cases with an adapter for the 5.25”driv bay (option).

One other thing to take into consideration on a new case, especially a server case is reliability. A leading cause of data loss is vibration on the HDD inside a case whether from shaking it or other cause. The In Win PE 689 case has a Vibration-free HDD holder, which helps prevent vibration. This case is available online for a price of around $50, making it a very affordable option for those looking for a case that will fit a CEB sized motherboard.

Bundle

  • In Win PE-689 Case
  • 8 Motherboard screws
  • 8 standoffs
  • 8 fan screws
  • Four Power Supply screws

In Win bundles their IW-PE689 case inside a plain brown box with the In Win logo on each side of the box. Opening the box we find that the PE689 case is wrapped inside two Styrofoam end pieces and a plastic bag, keeping it secure during shipment. As the case is tool-less throughout there is a minimum amount of screws included with the case for the motherboard tray, the Power Supply installation and the fan installation.

In Win has a very interesting case in the PE-689 Pedestal Server case, It is available for around $53 online, making it an easy recommendation for an inexpensive case.
