Gigabyte Aivia M8600 Wireless Macro Gaming Mouse Review

Thu, 2011-05-05 20:47 -- Shane N.

The M8600 is has a relatively slender frame with an overall sleek black body finish. It has a smooth texture on top with a rubbery surface on the sides. It has great grip and comfort for your hand for many applications. Probably one of the biggest attributes this gaming mouse has is that it comes with a spare Li-ion battery and both claim to have 50 hours of battery life each. That’s 100 hours that anyone can utilize to their hearts content. Also, the process of swapping batteries is simple and very fast. On the bottom of the mouse there is a button that easily unlocks the battery. This allows you to swap it with the fully charged spare one very quickly just like reloading a gun. Later on I will go over in great detail which grip style is suited best for this mouse.

To start things off, let’s go over the battery life of this mouse. Aivia offers two ion batteries, one in the mouse and one spare, and claims that their M8600 can last up to 100 hours and provide every gaming enthusiast a nonstop experience unparalleled like any before. In my honest opinion, I’d have to say that they definitely did not disappoint. The battery life on this mouse is just amazing. I was able to play over 80 hours of nonstop experience with various games. After the first battery was beginning to die out around 48 hours, I just switched it with the spare and starting playing again. And the process of swapping batteries was executed beautifully. It slides easy after you push the release button and locks easy once you put the new battery. I love that it really takes like a second to change batteries. Any gaming enthusiast will agree with me that some wireless gaming mice really perform poorly at battery life and overall execution. Logitech’s G700 wireless gaming mouse is a great gaming mouse that does poorly in this category. It has a gaming life of around 2-3 hours while in gaming mode. Aivia has performed much better than Logitech in this aspect. The M8600 definitely has great performance in the battery category.

The M8600 also has dual mode functionality with the ability to be used wired or wirelessly depending on the user’s preference. This is a great feature for people that want that instant reaction without any report rates loss through the wireless mode. However, there are two major flaws with the mouse. Firstly, in order to customize the mouse it has to be connected in wired mode. I really did not like that the mouse could not be customized in wireless mode. Many wireless gaming mice are able to receive the changes from the GUI to the mouse without it being connected. I do not see why Aivia did not make it standard for this mouse. And secondly, the process of changing from wired for wireless is harder than it looks. And the removal process from wired to wireless is amazingly hard. The slider mechanism did not perform well because pulling out the wire took a good pit of force to take out. The dual mode functionality is a nice touch but a few revisions are needed. There is also a multi-functional charging dock which can charge the mouse, the spare ion battery and is the wireless receiver when the mouse is in wireless mode. I think it’s great that the charging dock can charge both the mouse and the spare ion battery because it makes it very convenient for the user. Aivia has also included a storage bag and spare feet pads. The storage bag is great for on the go use and the spare feet pads are very useful for long term use when the original feet pads wear out. Now let’s go over some of the specs and the overall functionality of the GUI software.
