Niso Levitas · 09-25-2007 · Category: Tech-planations USB 3.0 - PCI-E 3.0Any way lets return back to the new technologies and talk about upcoming USB 3.0. We can not deny popularity of USB devices. You can find all kind of fancy USB stuff on market. Everything is possible to transform into USB form, from USB missile launcher to USB beverage chiller. Intel claims that USB 3.0 is going to deliver 10 times the speed of today's USB 2.0 speed. Of course your USB missile launcher or beverage chiller don't need that much improvement, but some devices need more. Especially if you backup or copy 200-300 GB to an external drive or want to burn blu-ray discs you definitely will like the new technology. USB 3.0 will increase transfer speed up to 4.8 gigabits per second (The current USB 2.0 offers only 480 megabits per second). It will be also backward compatible. In other words, current USB 1.0 and 2.0 devices will be able to work on new USB 3.0 ports. Different than the today's USB 2.0 technology USB 3.0 will provide increased energy efficiency and adopt a new physical layer using two channels to separate data transmissions and acknowledgements to hit its higher speed targets. Do not expect to see new USB 3.0 devices soon. It hopes to finish the spec early next year. So first products should likely arrive in late 2009. At the seminar we told that it will run over copper and optical cables. Here are first specs. Of course, it may change in future versions. 2.5 GHZ bandwidth of PCI-E 1.0 was barely enough on my 10 Gb NIC tests. And PCI-E 2.0 just doubled the bus standard's bandwidth from 2.5 Gbit/s to 5 Gbit/s. Before we start enjoying it Intel announced that they start working on 10 GHz PCI-E 3.0. The final PCIe 3.0 specs, including form factor specification updates, may be available by late 2009, and we don't expect to see any products before 2010. Contents
