Intel's idea of 2003 PC was on the showcase. Lecta. Small Form factor, LCD screen, Pentium 4 CPU, Serial ATA, USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, wireless connection, all integrated. They were planning to launch this in the second half of 2003. It looks too good to be true. Cooling and feeding Pentium 4 with enough power in a small box is not an easy task. We saw a new heatsink design for Pentium 4. They inserted a heat pipe inside the heatsink. They told us by this design; active cooling is not necessary anymore. Heatsink may fit into a small design but it was heavy and big. Attaching that heatsink and keep it attached will be a problem. Small power supply design was attractive. We will see those designs in practice soon.
Talking about 2003 PC, we saw a 2003 Fleetwood Caravan. It was not a prototype and it is possible to buy it. Why am I talking about a Caravan in a hardware article? It was completely computer-controlled caravan. Not just GPS devices and computer controlled air-conditioning. You could check the tires and battery of the caravan from a tablet PC inside. If you click and zoom in to the screen of the tablet PC you will see the other amazing controls. If you are rich enough of course! Till the next IDF…
